Some of the images especially in Parts 1 and 2 are so vividly surreal they jump off the pages as if they are a horror film and there are some great film references to support this. With plenty for forensics to, erm, get their teeth into, this is a police procedural and a thriller that at times verges on horror. This is a shortish novel at 224 pages but it sure packs a punch and that punch differs in each of the sections with the style of writing altering too.

Overall, this is a very well written and compelling novel that has the reader asking a multitude of questions and there are some little breadcrumbs to follow along this very different and twisty journey. We opened with Harry in southern California, getting away from it all - but mainly getting away from the memory of Rakel's death in the last novel. That is until the woman who saved Harry’s life is put in grave danger, forcing Harry to join the chase for the serial killer. Brilliant rogue police investigator Harry Hole is back, this time as an outsider assembling his own team to help find a serial killer who is murdering young women in Oslo in the next novel in the New York Times best-selling series.Jo says: “At the end of the last novel Harry was obviously in bad shape; he had lost the love of his life and he is at the airport rolling a dice, and letting the dice decide where to go next because he has to leave Oslo and escape. No llevaba muchas expectativas y creo que eso y no poder compararla con las anteriores ha jugado a mi favor. Two attractive young women have been murdered: Susanne Anderson's body was found without a brain; and Bertine Bertilsen's body was found without a head.

Nearly ten pages into Killing Moon, I wondered whether Nesbo had always depicted women in such a cruel, hateful way. But like many bands for example know, the quality of your product decreases when there's nowhere left to go. I’d counter with this question: Where is the value in perpetuating the idea of women as victims, in need of a mediocre old man to play hero? Part 1 is a traditional campy young adult-ish horror story that even though it had some issues, was still entertaining. Thank you to Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor, and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. When the body of one of them is found with fresh stitches along her hairline the hunt is on to find a murderer with very particular tastes. Despite its 500+ page length, it’s an absolute page-turner, and I was constantly excited to pick it back up again. There are parasite infestations (think The Last of Us), decapitations and, at one point, the anonymous perp eats a human brain. Killing Moon is not just an unbearably tense thriller but another of Nesbo's studies in love and loneliness.

It takes all of Hole’s ingenuity to uncover what must be the most unusual method of murder in contemporary crime fiction. I wanted him to solve the murders, reconcile with his old police mates and single-handedly clean up the streets of Oslo. And, yes, the book takes a while to read — but that only means there’s much more to enjoy here than you’d get in a conventional novel. One of Harry's bar friends is a 72-year-old woman named Lucille, a former actress who borrowed over nine hundred thousand dollars for a movie project. While he has been a published author for several years, The Night House marks his initial foray into the world of horror. In Oslo, two girls have disappeared and been found murdered and one of the suspects is a well-known real estate magnate. After three years military service he attended business school and formed the band Di derre ('Them There'). They have bought me hours of joy and intrigue, with a character who is loveable, complicated but also consumed by demons.
