Description

A Cognitive-Interpersonal Therapy Workbook for Treating Anorexia Nervosa: The Maudsley Model (Ulrike Schmidt, Helen Startup, & Janet Treasure). A self-help book to support people in overcoming anorexia nervosa through the use of cognitive behavioural techniques. Overcoming Binge Eating 2nd Edition: The Proven Program to Learn Why You Binge and How You Can Stop recording in detail all eating and drinking at the time that it occurs, together with relevant thoughts and feelings. In this gem of a book, Dr Fairburn draws upon decades of clinical experience and research findings on binge eating and related problems. This new (and thoroughly reworked) edition is a “must read” if you want to understand binge eating problems and begin (or guide and support others on) the journey toward full recovery.” 🫣

Another book was published by the same author listed above. This more recent book focuses on learning how to dismiss the urge to binge and learning how to eat adequately. The book is longer, but it is filled with exercises to help you put your learnings into practice. Breaking Free From Emotional Eating, By Genee Roth

My second issue.. I appreciate the alternative activities to binge eating suggested however I wish the author explained why these aren’t going to work long term. I wish the author talked about binge eating being a symptom and if you don’t work on healing these strategies are only going to get you so far. Through her own decade-long battle with anorexia, which included three lengthy hospitalizations, the author describes the haunting and competitive world of inpatient facilities populated with other adolescents, some as young as ten years old. Fat Chance (Leslea Newman) Written by the mother of someone diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, following their experiences of evidence-based treatment. Offers practical advice for managing mealtimes, information about helpful things/ unhelpful things to say, and advice on developing one’s own emotional resources. Chapters of the book and other helpful resources can also be found online at anorexiafamily.com. Is it too good to be true? Avoid books that use sensational language, such as “miracle cures” or “overnight success stories”. These are marketing terms to create buzz about the product and are not evidence-based health claims.

By any standard, Dr. Fairburn is the leading authority in our field, so who better to write the definitive book on binge eating? This program is based on vast clinical experience, numerous clinical trials, and a breadth of perspective that few possess. You can trust this book. It is a landmark."--Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, coauthor of Food Fight; Robert L. Flowers Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Duke University We are aware of issues around accessibility. There is not currently an audio version of Overcoming Binge Eating, however the book is available on kindle, where books can be read aloud using an auto-generated voice. Unfortunately Overcoming Binge Eating is not currently available in British Sign Language. Further Developments Below are recommended workbooks that might be beneficial for you. These workbooks will complement therapy sessions and can help you gain more insight into your binge eating habits. The DBT Solution For Emotional Eating: A Proven Program to Break the Cycle of Bingeing and Out-of-Control Eating, By Debra L. Safer, Sara Adler, and Philip C. Masson. Readers have posted online calling the previous version of this book 'a godsend' and 'the best book out there.' This substantially revised second edition is as good as the first and sets the standard for self-help books. This clearly written, practical guide is invaluable for anyone suffering from binge eating problems."--Roz Shafran, PhD, Institute of Child Health, University College London, United Kingdom Are you medically stable (as indicated by factors such as stable blood results and ECG for the last 3 months)? The original version of Overcoming Binge Eating was published in 1995. Since then Part I has become established as a leading source of information on binge eating problems. Meanwhile the treatment program in Part II has been investigated in numerous clinical trials making it possibly the most extensively tested self-help program for any problem. Time after time it has been found to be a potent source of help, either when used on its own or when used with external support (guided self-help). As a result the program has become established as a leading treatment for binge eating problems. In recognition of this, Overcoming Binge Eating was awarded the Seal of Merit from the US Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and in the UK National Health Service doctors can prescribe the book as if it were a form of medication. Overcoming Binge Eating is, in my opinion, the best self-help book for people struggling with binge eating. The binge eating book contains a psychoeducation component and a structured self-help component, shown to be highly effective. It’s easy to read and follow, and the self-help steps are based on solid evidence. Getting Better Bite By Bite (Ulrike Schmidt, Janet Treasure, & June Alexander)

p. 94 Those who develop bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa are unusually compliant and conscientious as children. They are often somewhat shy and solitary, and they may have had difficulty mixing with other children. In addition, they tend to be competitive and achievement oriented. They set themselves high standards and work hard to meet them. These traits seem to be the precursors of the low self-esteem and perfectionism seem in many people with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. If you struggle with body issues, body dysmorphia, or feel it's hard to love yourself - you will adore this book. Personal Experiences Time moves on, new knowledge is acquired, and with the new knowledge comes advances in treatment. As a result the second edition is essentially a new book. It continues to provide a comprehensive and up to date account of what we know about binge eating problems including those seen in anorexia nervosa, but it also provides much more information about dieting, body weight and body image. Dr. Christopher Fairborn has published several books on health and eating. This book is older, it was published in 1995, and the writing style may not appeal to everyone. Some people find this book helpful, while others feel it is dated. We’ve included it on the list so you can decide if it’s worthwhile for you or not. More Than A Body: Your Body Is An Instrument, Not An Ornament, By Lindsay Kite and Lexie Kite.
