The equivalent of London’s brand-new Elizabeth line . . . vast, shiny and very, very deep' - The Times, ‘Best Summer Reads’ As the anomaly is explored, first by workers on the project, then by a rogue artist-in-residence within the team, the implications for the city become profound. And when power fails across the whole of London, one of the men in charge has to recruit a mythical secret society of steam train enthusiasts to help avert catastrophe.Gerard, Malcolm; Hamilton, J. A. B. (1981) [1967]. Trains to Nowhere. London: George Allen & Unwin. ISBN 0-04-385084-7. The plot is different, and here London seems to be the main character; it feels like an ode to the great city, its history and people. The mix between old, current and future technologies makes a wonderful melange into the context of the story. However, the ending left me with a lot of questions, which I don't think will be answered soon. See details and commentary at Heritage Railway Magazine on-line Archived 17 May 2014 at archive.today. Despite sitting comfortably in the speculative fiction realm, much of this book feels generally eccentric but still grounded in the real world. Hughes’ love of the topics he’s writing about showing through strongly in the way Austin turns to his nostalgic memories of childhood enthusiasms in the form of the locomotive-obsessed Smokebox Club, and Rutherford’s earnest, somewhat pretentious musings on Brutalist architecture and his dreamlike sense of his personality merging with that of the city. The Smokebox Club in particular, with its mysterious leader ‘The Chief Engineer’, jaunty theme tune, secret hand sign and beautifully elegant logo/membership badge, is an absolute delight. The more heavily sci-fi elements of the plot do gradually develop though, taking things closer in some respects to the feel of XX towards the latter stages of the book and balancing that grounding in reality with some interesting, high-concept ideas. This definitely isn’t a hard-SF novel, but rather its own unique blend that doesn’t quite feel like anything else. On 1 January 1946, engine No. 5495 was involved in the Lichfield rail crash, in which the freight train it was hauling was derailed at Lichfield Trent Valley station, Staffordshire due to faulty points. The train collided with a passenger train, which was hauled by LNWR Prince of Wales Class 4-6-0 no. 25802, killing 20 people and injuring 21. [22]

The first was the absolute uncontrolled design departments in the LMS where very influential people previously with the Midland Railway dictated what went on, to weak design leaders and effectively prevented advancement of locomotive performance within the LMS. Much has been written about this situation and any book on LMS locomotives will include the arguments. Hunt, David; James, Fred; Essery, R.J.; Jennison, John; Clarke, David (2004). LMS Locomotive Profiles, no. 6 - The Mixed Traffic Class 5s - Nos. 5225-5499 and 4658-4999. Didcot: Wild Swan. ISBN 1-874103-93-3. This book is a must read for anyone that likes Sci-Fi, trains, London and architecture. Or just enjoys a good mind twisting read. I won’t go on about the different types of fonts and design used as it seems every other reviewer has done this better than I could, but I will say as someone who is forced to work in the construction industry, I did enjoy the CAD drawings and in-depth discussions on architectural detail. Mr Hughes is a man who knows his architectural stuff.

At first, i was worried. This was my first read of the year, and you always want to start strong, don’t you?

The second was really William Stanier’s position in the GWR where the promotion to Chief Engineer was not possible as the existing Chief Engineer, Mr. Collet, was of similar age to Stanier, and had several years to run in office. Stanier needed some persuasion to move as all his working life had been at Swindon, as had his father’s. However, all was done with full permission of the Great Western. He takes us to the Box Tunnel near Bath, that runs beneath Box Hill and MOD Corsham, and then tells us that Churchill used to pop out for a drink from here to a pub in Dorking, which is actually beside a completely different Box Hill, the one in Surrey.

See, for example, David Hunt, Bob Essery and Fred James with David Jennison and David Clarke, LMS Locomotive Profiles (three volumes, with pictorial supplements). [ full citation needed] Truly brilliant, London, it’s architecture and it’s beating heart laid bare. A graphic novel that tells a modern and up to date tale and an exploration of the world we live in. Some really come things happen amongst beautifulturns of phrase, and I love the musical tie- in, but precisely one question is ever answered and the reader is left wondering - was there a plot? What did I just read? No. 7 Mixed traffic class 5s: Caprotti valve gear engines and class summary (+ pictorial supplement) Note: Some locos may usually have a nameplate but marked names indicate that the loco is not presently wearing them. Loco numbers in bold indicate their current number. We explore beyond, now, two hatches, within one character’s POV, amid proportions, portholes, orientation, corridors, Corinthian helmet, short sword, half-arrows, and “balconies without balustrades that went nowhere”… Like nothing I have ever read before and I’m not just saying that. This absolutely magnificent mind bending read by Rian Hughes is something to behold both in the physical book and the story itself.
