Description

Trauma shears are built for use in trauma-related situations like emergency rooms and automobile accidents. They’re most often used by EMTs and trauma nurses. Size and Weight: Trauma shears come in different sizes, usually ranging from 5.5 to 7.5 inches or longer. Consider your personal preference and the types of materials you typically need to cut to choose the appropriate size. A lightweight pair of shears can also reduce hand fatigue during extended use. In a traumatic injury situation, every second counts. Having a good pair of trauma shears on hand can mean the difference between life and death. Can Trauma Shears Cut a Penny?

They cut well enough but the handles are a little narrow and hard to apply pressure to. It’s not as noticeable if you’re wearing gloves but they can cause a bit of hand pain if you use them too often.

Trauma shears always have a blunt tip. This prevents them from accidentally cutting the person whose clothes the medic is trying to remove. Blade type: There are two main types of blades used in trauma shears: serrated and nonserrated. Serrated blades are better for cutting through tough materials, while nonserrated blades are more precise and ideal for delicate cuts. Consider the materials you’ll be cutting most often and choose the blade type accordingly. ADC’s Medicut Nurse Shears is designed with tempered blades that are very tough and hard, contributing to the durability and the quality of this medical shear. Also is powerful rivet that holds the two blades together. Compact and Portable: Despite their rugged construction, they are compact enough to fit into EMS pants or a camping first aid kit. Trauma shears may be heavier and more unwieldy than bandage scissors. But bandage scissors can’t perform in all the same situations as trauma shears.

Length: Opt for shears around 7-8 inches long, as they strike a balance between portability and functionality. Most traditional trauma shears feature an overall length of 7.5 inches, and most multi-tool offerings are comparable. That said, small and miniature shears do exist with an overall length of five inches or less, designed for more niche applications than the standard size trauma shears. Blade materials Our Newest edition ONE SHEAR MINI is a 6" length miniature trauma shear that still out weights the typical disposable shears; with its full solid steel construction. It has a 2" Blade length and 2.5oz lightweight. The blades are a little thinner than you’d find with a standard pair of shears. Because of this, they might have slightly more flex when you’re cutting through tough materials. They may also be a little difficult to wield if you have larger hands. Serrated blades may be more difficult to work with. This is more of a subjective “con,” though, as you may find that you actually prefer the serrated blade if you are cutting through clothing more than bandages, for instance. For first responders and military medics quality trauma shears can literally be the difference between life and death for their patients. It’s important that any tool they choose be rugged, reliable, and highly functional. Remember: Practice is essential to develop the skills necessary for using trauma shears effectively in emergency situations. It’s a good idea to participate in training sessions or simulations to hone your skills and build confidence in using this essential tool. Trauma Shears vs. Bandage Scissors What is the most important thing to consider when shopping for a pair of trauma shears? Durability versus cost. For instance, if you are looking for a pair that you can use heavily every day in a variety of functions for an entire career, going with an offering from Leatherman or XSHEAR The notch on some trauma shears, also known as a clothing lift lip, is designed to protect the patient’s skin when cutting through materials.

Those are just some of what I think are currently the best trauma shears on the mark. Each of these shears has their pros and cons (even if it’s just price), but the real evaluation should again take place dependent on the capacity for which you expect to need them. Finishes like titanium-bonded and DLC (extremely rare on trauma shears) increase blade durability. Since most trauma shears use low-cost stainless steels for their blades, these finishes provide an extremely thin yet resilient layer of protection against both wear and rust. Autoclave-safe Both the blades and rivets are crafted from surgical stainless steel, making the emergency scissors ideal for use in surgery situations as well. The extra features are also incredibly useful for an EMT. The ring cutter is located just behind the main rivet and allows you to safely apply incredible pressure to a ring. The oxygen wrench and strap cutter are both designed to be used when in the closed position.A few of trauma shears can not undergo autoclaving because their handles are made of plastic materials that can melt at a high temperature during autoclaving. However, such medical scissors can be sterilised with bleach solution after used. It’s there for important to know what type of shears or scissors you want. Do you want a type that can be autoclave or can only be sterilised? Make sure you answer this questions before jumping on any of our list above. Besides, any type that you want, we have made provisions for it in the list above. The Materials They’re autoclavable but can be difficult to clean with wipes and other techniques. Given the number of features they possess and their high price they aren’t the best option for emergency room workers and others in hospital medical professionals. Additionally, XSHEAR® offers a sleek protective holster (sold separately) that ensures easy access and storage. There’s no official definition of surgical steel so it’s a good idea to take any product labeled as such with a grain of salt.

Surgical steel: Some are made of surgical steel, which is a grade of stainless steel with specific alloys to make the shears safer for use in medical applications. Sharp and Powerful. Glide through even metal-reinforced materials such as zippers. Cut through leather like butter. Models should also be easy to clean. Many bandage scissors and trauma shears are built to be autoclavable for people who need to disinfect their gear in hospital settings.
