Retrieved 16 April 2016.edit ] David Longdon and Dave Gregory both joined the band in 2009 and contined until 2021 and 2020 respectively, Longdon's tenure ended when he died after an accident. Songs 1, 3 & 4 are completely re-arranged with a 17-piece string section: "East Coast Racer" is a completely new studio version recorded by the line-up of the band as it was in 2019. "Brooklands" features newly recorded drums, bass and bass pedals, while Voyager includes additional guitar and violin. All three songs have been re-mixed for this release. While this endeavor may be preaching to the converted, it’s a fact many prog enthusiasts embrace. Devotees will meticulously dissect each nuance, alteration, and note, and that’s precisely the essence. Prog thrives on own internal validation after all, and therein lies its, well, ingenious nature. Gregory Spawton explains: “I was always happy with the original recorded version of East Coast Racer, but adding the strings at Abbey Road gave the song a further lift and the new recording also features Dave Gregory’s guitar solo on the closing section, a solo which has only previously featured on live performances of the song. I am pleased we now have the definitive studio version on Ingenious Devices. The timing of this release also deliberately ties in with the 85th anniversary of the Mallard’s speed record which inspired the lyric. of 2022, but that had already been long planned and David had performed on it and knew exactly what it was going to

Big Big Train Recruit Beardfish's Sjoblom — BEARDFISHBAND.COM". Archived from the original on 15 April 2014 . Retrieved 15 June 2014. This live recording almost sounds too good to be live. It was expertly performed, and the recording is crisp and clear. Perhaps the only hint is the gentle reverb on Alberto Bravin's vocals from the venue itself. One of the primary differences between the live version and the studio is Clare Lindley's violin replaces Longdon's flute at the beginning. The band created a new arrangement for "Kingmaker", which they performed and recorded in June 2011. "Kingmaker" originally appeared on their 1992 demo album, The Infant Hercules. The new recording features the current line-up and replaced "Master of Time" on the Russian release of Far Skies Deep Time in a mini vinyl album format. [15]In the late 1980s, they decided to record some demos together. After a few months, the very first Big Big Train songs emerged and in 1990, Archshine ceased to exist, and Big Big Train was founded, initially consisting of the duo of Spawton (guitar) and Poole (bass). The following year saw the recruitment of Cooper (keyboards), Steve Hughes (drums), and Martin Read (vocals). [5]

The album closes with a live version of Atlantic Cable, recorded at the Friars Aylesbury show in September 2022. While this isn't part of the "mankind and machine" trilogy, it certainly fits in that vein, as the song is about the laying of the first telegram cable connecting North America with Europe: "the continents are joined together again with the thrill of the line." At the start of 2014 Beardfish frontman Rikard Sjöblom was confirmed as a touring keyboardist and guitarist. [19] In August, the band convened at Real World Studios for a week to try out a live line-up that also included violinist Rachel Hall and a five-piece brass band under the directorship of trombonist Dave Desmond, who had featured on recent Big Big Train albums. The positive outcome led to the band announcing that its first live performances in seventeen years would take place in August 2015 at Kings Place in London, [20] and that Sjöblom and Hall were now full band members for both live and studio work. [21] Three dates were announced, selling out within days, and the gigs were voted Event of the Year by the readers of Prog magazine. [22] version of "Atlantic Cable", which was recorded on the band's tour in September 2022 with ex-PFM singer Alberto A personal favourite BBT epic, East Coast Raceris a completely new studio version recorded by the line-up of the band as it was in 2019.Gregory Spawton proudly calls it “ the definitive studio version.” With Dave Gregory’s guitar solo on the closing section, previously featured only on live versions of the song, adding to the climactic closing passage, the finale and the “ Into history, into legend, she flies” lines are pure Prog heaven. Almost as iconic as Genesis doing the New Jerusalem in Supper’s Ready or the soaring middle section of Yes’ And You And I. In a word, goosebumps.

Ewing, Jerry (27 April 2022). "Big Big Train announce Alberto Bravin as new lead singer". loudersound . Retrieved 27 April 2022. With this release, Big Big Train has dared to push the boundaries even further, and in so doing, have created an impressive evolution.

In 2003, Müller and Read departed the band, and Sean Filkins was recruited to replace Read. [8] This line-up recorded the band's next album, Gathering Speed, which was released in March 2004. This was the last album to feature Ian Cooper on keyboards; Poole and Spawton took the keyboards to play in future albums. The most interesting part for me is the addition of Atlantic Cable and an introduction to Alberto Bravin. It sounds like he will be a good fit for the band, a different kind of voice to David Longdon, but then Mr Longdon’s vocals changed markedly over the years as he grew into the role. I’m confident that the journey with Mr Bravin will be just as enjoyable.

Alberto Bravin comments: “Atlantic Cable was recorded at our second show of the tour last year. It’s not an easy song to play at all and we were both amazed and relieved that we pulled it off so well. I experienced a real baptism of fire playing that show in front of over 1,000 passionate BBT fans, but their response to the song and the rest of our live set that night was truly motivating.” with to give them a new life. Any excuse to listen to Longdon's vocals is always to be welcomed of course, as he was These additional dates form part of the band’s The Journey Continues tour and are in addition to the band’s previously announced headlining appearance at the 2 Days + 1 Festival in Italy on 2 nd September 2023. At these performances the band will be promoting the forthcoming Ingenious Devices album, which will be released on 30 th June 2023.
