The nose conjures spiced honey mead in a musty old barrel, what with its heavy, creamy sweet cereals and spice blend enmeshed in a certain earthiness. In contrast to that, the flavor is on the dry side, quite woody and tannin-heavy, with only a moderate malty sweetness to round it out, this seasoned with vanilla and ginger. The finish is just as dry and gingery, with a long, lingering warmth. Unusual for a Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. [10] [4] :16 The mash tun at the distillery is a modern stainless steel semi-Lauter mash tun, with a copper canopy. [4] :15 Generally the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still (known as the "Intermediate Still") helps to give a final spirit strength of 81% ABV (162 proof). [10] This triple distillation, in addition to an unpeated malt, [5] gives Auchentoshan a more delicate and sweet flavour than many Scotch whiskies. [6] Maturation is mainly in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts, though some Auchentoshans will mature in French wine casks. [11]Taste: light- to medium-bodied. That smoke I noticed on the nose is more apparent now. A touch of bitterness as well. Not too sweet. The vanilla and citrus are there and gone. The signature nuttiness of almonds coming through now. Anyway, reading between the lines, you might get the feeling I’m not particularly enamoured by Auchentoshan. And you would be right. This is a distillery that hasn’t yet won me over. The triple distillation is interesting, but I struggle to find other hooks. And yet, it’s a hugely successful brand that’s in the Top 20 best-selling Scotch single malts in the world. There is an audience for their lighter, accessible style. I’m just not sure if I am part of that audience. The distillery has a visitor centre and conference facilities, both completed in 2005, and is open to the public for tours every day of the week.

Nose: gentle. Light citrus, a bit of chocolate fudge, and...a touch of smoke? I swear I'm not crazy, it's there. Not exactly peat smoke, maybe more like faint cigar ash. Also some florals. Summer meadow. Not the most captivating nose ever, but still interesting. While the Classic is the more entry-level Auchentoshan, it is not one you can get here in Ontario. So the 12 Year Old is much more ubiquitous here. Auchentoshan 12 Years is the entry malt for the Auchentoshan distillery which is one of only 3 remaining Lowlands distilleries after the whisky market crash that caused a rash of distillery closures in 1983. Like many of the now defunct Lowlands distilleries, Auchentoshan practices a triple distillation which is a fairly common practice in Ireland, but much less so in Scotland where the majority of distilleries practice a 2x distillation. Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. Auchentoshan’s claim to fame is that they’re the one distillery in Scotland to triple distil their entire output. As a consequence, their new make spirit sits at an impressive 81%, much higher than the average Scottish distillery. It’s an interesting distinction and a unique selling point they’ve wholeheartedly embraced. The distillery happily emphasizes triple distillation is more time-consuming, more expensive, and absolutely unique. Which isn’t false. But triple distillation isn’t better (or worse). It’s just a different method.

The Auchentoshan distillery was built in 1823. [4] [8] The original distillery was built by a corn merchant named John Bulloch and managed with his son. [4] Following their bankruptcy in 1834, the distillery was sold to Alexander Filshie, a local farmer and it remained under control of his family until 1877, following a bad harvest when it was sold again to several owners. [4] In 1877, the distillery was acquired by the Glasgow distillers John & George MacLachlan. [4] The area around the distillery was damaged during the Second World War and a bomb crater behind the distillery now acts as a pond for cooling water. [4] The distillery was bought by Eadie Cairns in 1969, who rebuilt it completely. [8] Cairns sold Auchentoshan to whisky blenders Stanley P Morrison (later to become Morrison Bowmore distillers) in 1984. [8] [4] Suntory invested in Morrison Bowmore in 1989 and in 1994, they acquired 100% of its holdings. [4] In May 2014, [9] Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited merged to create Beam Suntory Inc, who are now the owners of Auchentoshan and other Morrison Bowmore holdings.
