Australia’s Gallery of Modern Art commissioned Xiu Xiu to reinterpret the music from Twin Peaks for their David Lynch: Between Two Worlds exhibition. Since then, the band has performed select concerts all over the globe culminating in a proper studio album of the compositions. The 2xLP will be followed by a second double vinyl release collecting music from the second half of Twin Peaks this summer. There is a surreal atmosphere in David Lynch’s projects. He injects such a unique personality across all his work. He’s one of only a few filmmakers that after ten minutes or so, you know that he’s behind what you’re watching. His stuff feels individual and separate from each other and still so similar and recognisable at the same time. Twin Peaks is no exception. Side C was problematic on my original 2017 copy, particularly Threnody, so I bought this newer version, believing it would be better. It was hardly any better, and I only had more problems with Side D. Noisy, unsettling experimental pop in turns touching and political. It’s direct printed so has plenty of colour pop and vibrancy and is built to take whatever life drops on it. We might even say its almost as tough as Tommy “Hawk” Hill’s police issue boots! Wonderful indeed! I use the beautiful extra print as the cover, the vinyl is silent and superbly clear and deep. The music speaks for itself! Much like the original show, this movie started out fantastically, with some amazing "surprise" appearances/performances (Bowie, Isaak) to add to that. Then it fell flat, and for me, they totally burst the bubble with revealing way too much about Leland Palmer (Laura's father) and the ongoings in the Palmer family. It was also difficult for me to accept that they exchanged Lara Flynn Boyle with Moira Kelly. UGH... No one does a better Donna Hayward than Lara did. It’s difficult to overstate the cultural impact of Twin Peaks 25 years ago. Transferring his art-house cinema ethic to the small screen, David Lynch’s cerebral, surrealist murder mystery series towered like a desert skyscraper over the wastelands of mainstream US TV drama.
