Overall I find the topic interesting in general, so I really enjoyed just the sheer amount of information provided, all in a book that is really easy to read and that is written very straightforwardly. He was one of the first journalists at the scene of the IRA's Docklands bomb and, after moving to Belfast, reported on the second IRA ceasefire, the Good Friday Agreement and the Omagh bombing as well numerous explosions, shootings, riots, marches and political crises. I'll never forget the night Stephen Restorick was shot just round the corner from me or hearing the bomb explosion that killed Lord Justice Gibson and his wife. While they may have sentimental value, bibles passed down through the family are not often worth a lot of money. Second, it's all about military operations by the IRA in South Armagh and doesn't attempt to deal with the internal politics of Sinn Fein or the IRA.

While the book is based on a lot of interviews and a fair amount of secondary reading (as evinced by the bibliography), it is not properly referenced. According to RUC statistics, the area within a 10-mile radius of the heart of S/Armagh has seen 1255 bomb attacks and 1158 shooting incidents since the 'troubles' began. And the author has a bit of an obsession with thomas murphy and it goes through out the entire book. The Irish Republican History Museum in Belfast has over 5000 artifacts that chronicle the history of resistance to the British occupation of Ireland.

This was where many of the British troops in Northern Ireland were killed and it became one of the most dangerous places to serve in in the British Army. Patterson shows us how the militarised boundary line of old has morphed into an invisible and semi-wild frontier, where the ghosts of a thirty-year war continue to haunt the ‘ceasefire generation’. So from the perspective of going into this subject with almost no context, I found that this book did a good job explaining everything, giving a lot of details and a lot of context about a complex situation with many different perspectives. May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text.Eventually, Johnson and his ex-MI6 colleague Jayne Robinson uncover historic hidden files, documents and dark secrets from three decades earlier that certain high-flying public figures would rather remained unread. The very mention of South Armagh can send a shiver down the spine of any one of the tens of thousands of soldiers who have served there since the 'Troubles' began. It also gives an insight of the British soldiers that should not have been allowed patrol such an area due to their youth and time ahead of them in their life. Toby Harnden approaches the subject in a thoroughly professional manner and reveals no bias for any side in his excellent book. Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material.
