Referrals are considered on an individual basis by the Multi-disciplinary Team. Clear goals are set with patients (if possible), and rehabilitation is goal focused. Wheelchair clinic appointments are held at the Wheelchair Service in Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen. The Service also runs peripheral clinics in Orkney and Shetland according to demand. If you need a lifting aid (such as a hoist or stand aid) during your visit, please phone the clinic as soon as possible using the phone number that is printed on your appointment letter to arrange this with staff. NRU is a 12 bedded rehabilitation unit based at Woodend Hospital, serving the population of Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. As you know, volunteers are always active at the heart of every UK community, even more so over the last few difficult years, so this Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to take time to thank volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole. It’s about celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. Your assessment will be carried out by health care professionals and can take from 30 minutes up to several hours. Having an assessment done at this time means that you will have to spend less time in hospital when you come in for your operation. Horizons Rehabilitation Centre accept referrals from professional colleagues in health and social care within the Grampian area, and aim to provide community-based, multi-disciplinary programmes of rehabilitation, based on service users’ own goals. A specialist is always responsible for the clinic session. You may not be seen by them, but by another clinician who can discuss your management with the specialist if required.During the 1920s TB pavilions were introduced and verandas added to some of the existing buildings. In 1931 Wellwood House at Cults opened under the direction of the asylum for early and transient uncertified patients (see separate entry below). During the 1930s the hospital was remodelled and Elmhill house converted into a nurses’ home. Let hospital staff know if there are any dates you know you will be unable to attend, such as holidays. Offer a full social and support programme including group meetings, social outings, exercise classes and speakers evenings.

FONTHILL MATERNITY HOME, 60 Fonthill Road, ABERDEENA domestic house was taken over by Aberdeen Corporation in 1945 and opened as a maternity unit in 1946. Latterly it acted as an annexe to the Aberdeen Maternity Home. Still marked as a maternity home on maps of the 1970s, and was still operating in 1990. The building was still extant in 2019, but is no longer in hospital use. Dr Gray’s Hospital does not have specific rehabilitation beds for ABI, any severe traumatic brain injuries or polytrauma would be referred to the NRU in Aberdeen.

At Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, from A&E, a patient requiring admission for observation would be transferred to ward 101, and if appropriate, to the Neurosurgery unit, (ward 205). Patients are then discharged from neurosurgery to the NRU, then step down to Craig Court after accessing neuropsychology input within the Neurorehabilitation unit (NRU).
