Description

As the men drink their beer, they discuss Winter and Saxo’s attempt to climb the Citadel and are distraught at the idea of the proud and boastful Saxo’s summiting before a Kurtaler. The book is full of climbing action and it is wonderfully vivid and tense, carrying the reader along with Rudi through his painful and dangerous exploits. There was a part of the story where the character uses the Lord's prayer inappropriately - and that was annoying/unnecessary. Throughout the book, however, Rudi slowly comes to understand that imitating his virtuous father means much more than that. Sky banners include aerial billboards, sky letter banners and combo aerial billboards, which include a logo banner combined with a sky letter banner with your message.

Fifteen years ago, Rudi Matt's father died trying to climb the Citadel, the last unconquered summit in the Alps. Franz Lerner, who is Rudis uncle, accompanied Josef Matt before his fatal attempt at climbing the Citadel. The film was made on location in Switzerland with Gaston Rébuffat as the head of the mountain second unit photography. This is a book that I would have never picked up to read, but it was in Elyssa home school curriculum.I had learned why a good climber often holds his body well out from the rockface and how one can, and sometimes must, climb with the knees and the elbows. The main character Rudi is an interesting character as we see throughout the course of the story how he grows and changes as a person. By the end of the story we are rooting for these characters, we want to see them succeed, as we see what it would mean if they didn’t. The film was based on the 1954 novel Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman, who had written The White Tower.

It is a great book about mountain climbing, lots of cool techinical stuff for mountaineers like Joe, yet understandable for those of us with no mountain climbing experience.

John Winter, a renowned guide in Switzerland, owes his life to Rudi and now wants Rudi to join him in climbing the Citadel. I just completed my second re-read of Banner in the Sky, and I think I have found myself enjoying it more each time. B. Lippincott coming out in 1941 followed by The White Tower, River of The Sun, Windom's Way, and Banner in the Sky which was a 1955 Newbery Honor book. Will they reach the Summit and overcome the many obstacles such as the harsh weather conditions, the limited amount of food, and Rudi’s little experience in mountain climbing?
