You get a couple of accessories with the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach. The long crevice tool is good to see, as most recent vacuums have a shorter version that’s much less useful.

However, you need a screwdriver to remove the brush bar for cleaning, which isn’t the easiest method. Many vacuums we’ve reviewed have much simpler methods for removing the bar. And the belt for the rotating brush bar is a real weak point that’s prone to snapping. Other Tools and Accessories There’s a large 1.5-litre bin that easily unclips from the body. Push the eject button at the bottom and a flap flips open so you can tip out the contents. If you’ve collected a fair bit of fluff and hair then you may need to open the top flap, pull out the cone and give it all a good shake. We test each corded vacuum multiple times on carpet, laminate and floorboards. To assess performance, we cover each surface with dust and calculate the percentage the vacuum removes. The rotating brush bar can be switched off easily so the vacuum can glide more gently over deep pile rugs. We found out the hard way that you must switch off the auto sensor and brush bar buttons when vacuuming delicate surfaces - when we attempted to vacuum over a Persian carpet with the auto sensor button and brush bar on the machine went into overdrive and tried to chew up the tassles. We tried again with both buttons off and it then glided over the carpet and tassles without fault.

Our biggest issue is the hose attachment. Every time you want to use it, you have to detach it from where it’s stored, clip it to the airflow, and then add the tool you want.
