Campbell, Malcolm. "Wainwright Walks: Coast to Coast with Julia Bradbury". DVDActive . Retrieved 1 June 2009. [ dead link] But to save you time sifting through his catalogue of routes, we thought we’d bring together our top ten Wainwright Lake District walks, each offering something slightly different, so that, whatever your ability or taste, you’ll be sure to find something to suit you. 1. Blencathra Kurt, Alex (18 July 2016). "This Sheep-Farming Fell Runner Is Still Going Strong at 80". Trail Runner . Retrieved 16 December 2018. As there are so many Wainwrights to explore, it means there is a real variety of fells in terms of terrain and incline level which is great as it means there really is something for everyone. Some of the more popular fells that people of an average fitness level can enjoy include Catbells, Hallin Fell and High Rigg, Binsey. Latrigg is one of the lowest fells, and so it's a great walk for almost everyone that still boasts beautiful views.

It’s also manageable for beginners. A gentle stroll from Rosthwaite along the River Derwent will make for a good warm-up before visiting Lodore Falls Hotel for lunch or afternoon tea. 3. High Street You start the walk by skirting alongside Ullswater with fantastic views over the lake. The ascent is steady to begin with, as you make your way up to a viewing point, where you can take in almost the entirety of the 7-mile long Ullswater Lake. A walk can be what you make it – you can walk the dog, walk the kids to school or simply go for a walk in your lunch break; whatever it is you’re always winning. For those who want to add that little bit more; a slightly more strenuous, time-consuming adventure, Alfred Wainwright has done the hard work for you. All you have to do is walk.

In 2010, Eric Robson presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary called "The Man behind the Mountains" (16 October 2010). [18] Holme Fell in the Lake District National Park is the 2nd lowest Wainwright at 317 metres (1,040.0ft). These ‘Wainwrights’ have now become the definitive list for anyone wanting to visit the summits of all the fells in the Lake District,” writes endurance athlete Steve Birkinshaw, who ran all of the Wainwrights in 2014, in the introduction to ' Peak Bagging: Wainwrights'. The new guidebook, written by Karen and Dan Parker (sister and brother-in-law of Steve) and published by Vertebrate Publishing is a complete guide to climbing all 214 of Wainwright’s Lake District fells in the most efficient way - with 45 routes included in the book. To summit all 214 fells is considered the ultimate feat of peak bagging in the Lake District – if you fancy taking it on, consider that the current record for climbing them all is six days, six hours and four minutes, set in 2019 by Irish fell runner Paul Tierney – that’s 320 miles (515km) and 118,000 feet (36,000m) of ascent. Clarke, Anna (9 January 2014). "Updating the Wainwright walking books will be a labour of love for Clive". Westmorland Gazette . Retrieved 2 June 2014.

Sitting in the far eastern fells, the hill is part of a 15.1km Fusedale Circuit which features in Karen and Dan's book, with 860m of ascent involved. This lovely little Wainwright route up Silver How is very convenient for Grasmere. You start in the centre of the village and pass through the grounds of Allan Bank (once home to William Wordsworth and now a National Trust property). The paths are easy to follow, and the only really steep section is towards the top, after which you’ll be presented with views towards the famous Langdale Pikes. The route down is mostly steps, which makes things a little easier on your knees! Wainwright, A (1964). A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book 6: The North Western Fells.
