Description

Signs such as way in, way out, toilets and canteen are essential in most business locations, and are universally recognised by guests. For power assist doors operated by pushing or pulling the door or by a remote device, the signs must read “EASY OPEN DOOR – PUSH TO OPERATE,” and “EASY OPEN DOOR – PULL TO OPERATE”. The Regulations require employers to use a safety sign where there is a significant risk to health and safety that has not been avoided or controlled by the methods required under other relevant law, provided use of a sign can help reduce the risk. Safety signs are not a substitute for those other methods of controlling risks such as engineering controls and safe systems of work. Thresholds higher than 6 mm should be beveled or have sloped edges to facilitate the passage of a wheelchair. 3.7 Exit doors landing There are times when personalised office door signs are needed to indicate exactly what a particular room is, or whose office is behind the door. We have a range of signs that can be customised to suit your needs. Our customisable sliding signs for doors are particularly useful as they can indicate if a room, or person, is available, or even whether a particular doorway is currently being used as an entrance or an exit.

The Health and Safety Executive’s Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Approved Code of Practice. This is necessary as the HSE investigates all accidents involving power-operated doors. Warning people of hazards: Safety signs can warn people of potential hazards in the workplace, such as slippery floors, moving machinery, or hazardous chemicals. Warning signs can help people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. In public buildings, the function or room number, incorporating international symbols should be identified at eye level, i.e. between 1.40 m and 1.60 mBeyond legal requirements, however, your business may need many door signs to simply aid the smooth running of the organisation. You should assess the various areas of your business premises, paying particular attention to areas accessed by the general public, outside contractors and temporary staff, and ascertain exactly which signs are needed, or those that would make life easier for everyone on the premises. Because power-operated doors are essentially machines with moving parts, the safety of users is a key consideration. The obvious hazards are where moving parts move past fixed parts, creating the possibility of trapping fingers or even crushing bodies. In general, EN 16005 is deemed to be more onerous than the existing national standards. Key aspects include:

Door handles should be located at a comfortable height between 0.90 m and 1.00 m from the floor surface. Revolving doors. A typical revolving door has several potential danger points due to the number of closing edges. On moving leaves, foot or heel switches are needed so that if the door catches up with the user it will stop. On the top of the moving leaf there should be a safety sensor. And on the leading mullion a safety strip is required.Doors required to comply with BHMA A156.10 include power-operated pedestrian doors, as well as doors with low-energy operators that are not operated by a knowing act. The signage requirements of A156.10 apply to swinging, sliding, and folding doors, and the signage must be visible from both sides of the door. Currently, the standard requires signage stating “AUTOMATIC DOOR” with letters 1/2-inch high minimum, although the visual character requirements of ICC A117.1 – Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, require a minimum character height of 5/8-inch. There are already a number of standards and codes of practice to be taken into consideration when designing and installing automatic doors. These include:

For double-leaf doors, at least one leaf should have a minimum clear width of 0.80 m 3.4 Manual door hardware Completely glazed doors should be avoided in buildings frequented by people with visual impairments. This will depend on various factors, but here are a few of our most popular and versatile door signs: Automatic doors should have an adequate opening interval. -Guard-rails can be installed near double-swinging doors to indicate a door-opening area and to prevent people from being hit by the door.

Thresholds should be omitted wherever possible. Weather-stripping at the door bottom is preferred to thresholds. Details on positioning and requirements of the signs are outlined within the BS 7036-0 which is covered when you take the BS EN16005 course and exam. You can read more about the BS EN16005 here.
