All you require is a smoothing knife and a tub of filler and you can get to work. I have included our choice of filler below. Universal primer can be used on bare wood, metal, plaster, and masonry, so is a great option if you’re painting multiple surfaces around the house. Apply this primer with a brush or roller. There are 3 main ways you can cover an Artex Ceiling or Wall without the need for plastering. If you have any further suggestions let us know in the comments below. When the filler is dry – as per manufacturer's instructions – rub down the whole sheet including the filler and edges to get a smooth surface to paint. Get a damp cloth to get rid of any dust on the sheet. Use a vacuum to remove any dust from nearby areas. The application of all of these smoothing paints is really simple. You just paint them on, however you normally would.

With an interior wall filler, there are a number of things you are looking for. It ideally must be fast drying, easy to sand down and not require any priming as the last thing you want is to have to spot prime a single part of the wall where you have filled. There are a number of excellent options, but a popular one is by high quality decorating sundries manufacturer Toupret, who have a classic interior filler that is ideal for use on interior walls. This is an extremely versatile filler that can be used on unpainted or painted surfaces such as plaster & only requires one coat filling. Before applying, ensure surfaces are clean, sound and free from dust, Fill deep surface defects with Everbuild Fill & Skim first and smooth down. Etch primer is used on untreated ferrous metals including aluminium, zinc, copper, brass, tin, and steel. Apply with a brush, or spray. This is a common occurrence in new houses and is often the result of plaster drying out or movement of the building. Putting it right It will need to be built up in layers, for the best results. Leaving 6 hours for the filler to dry between each layer. If you’re painting over a dark colour with a lighter colour, priming the wall will help to cover the dark wall, and your new colour look more saturated and pigmented, without the need for lots and lots of layers. When painting over a dark coloured wall with primer paint, take as much care as you would with your new colour. If the primer looks patchy and uneven, your new colour will too. This dead wood must be completely removed by rubbing it down to new sound wood. If outside, the wood can then be primed with Weathershield Exterior Preservative Primer followed by the Weathershield Undercoat& Gloss. Rotten wood Cause Aluminium wood primer is used on softwoods and on surfaces that have been previously treated with wood preservative. Apply with a brush and clean your equipment with white spirit. Application: Apply a generous coat by airless spray followed immediately by tipping off with a medium pile roller. For airless spray application, we recommend a minimum working pressure of 140 kg/cm² (2000 Ib/sq in) with a spray tip size of 19 thou and a fan of 12 inches. May also be applied by brush, roller or conventional spray. When applying by spray, work into all pores and voids with the first pass, then finish with a full coat. If applying by brush, remove brush marks with a partially loaded roller while the filler is still wet. Do not apply if the surface temperature is below 10°C. Like water-borne primer, solvent-borne primer can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, including woodwork, cement, and building boards. This primer can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray. As solvent-borne primer is oil-based, you will need to clean your equipment with white spirit or brush cleaner.

When the surface is thoroughly dry the affected surface will need to be rubbed down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper. It can then be re-coated. Whether you’re covering a dark colour on interior walls, painting wooden doors, or adding paint to your metal surfaces, it can be tempting to get your new colour on straight away. With this method, you will be filling in all the imperfections with a special type of filler, specifically designed to smooth over textured walls. If you’re painting over a glossy surface, it’s hard for the paint to adhere without the use of primer. If your walls have previously been covered with high-gloss or enamel paint, you will almost certainly need to apply a primer paint before you start painting and may even need to gently sand the surface before priming if it is very high-gloss. Open joints are common when wood butted together during construction dries out and shrinks away. Fill the gaps with a wood filler and sand down with a fine abrasive, then use a primer over the surface. For furniture you can try a Frenchic paint and if painting outdoors make sure that you choose a good exterior wood paint such as Dulux Weather Shield. Is Painted Plywood Waterproof? Now you need to seal the plywood with a primer. You will need a 2–inch paint brush and a roller. A mini roller (4-inch) is ideal for edges and smaller areas. Use a bigger 9–inch roller for larger areas.

Buying the right primer for your job can be a daunting prospect. You’re in the DIY store and are confronted by endless isles of tins, all looking frustratingly similar. With any painting job, preparing your surface correctly is key to a smooth, professional, and long-lasting finish. Primer paint is a vital step when preparing your surface. It may require a little bit more elbow grease on your part, but you should be able to get the job done! It is important to seal the original stain by applying a coat of Polycell Stain Stop prior to re-decorating. Make sure that all filled areas are rubbed down smooth and level. You will need to prime the filler before painting to prevent subsequent coats being absorbed more rapidly than on other areas. Use a coat of Dulux emulsion thinned 10-20% with clean water. Once this is dried you can apply a full coat of Dulux emulsion. Water-borne primer can be used for interior and exterior surfaces, such as woodwork, plaster, and hardboard. Apply your water-borne primer with a brush, roller, or spray. We recommend a brush as this will help the primer to penetrate the surface and plug any holes. Clean your paintbrush afterwards with water. However, using a primer is almost always worth the extra effort. The primer adds a layer between your raw surface and subsequent coats of paint. On porous surfaces, this smooths out the surface, avoiding the need for unnecessary coats of paint later and an uneven final result. The filler will need to be spread over the Artex with a wide jointing/smoothing knife or equivalent. The kit below provides all the tools you will need to apply and smooth off the filler. It can be tempting to skip the preparation stage when you’re keen to see the finished product and are itching to add that bold colour-pop to your surface. Loss of gloss is normally only noticed with high gloss paint & varnishes. It is caused by the settling of dew or condensation on the paint shortly after application. This is often a problem when painting out of season, or in areas of high condensation like bathrooms. Putting it right As long as the stain isn’t of the penetrating type, as a water or nicotine stain is, then they will cover it.

Undercoat is applied after primer paint and provides a smooth, even layer to apply your final coat of coloured paint onto. Some good quality paints combine an undercoat with the paint, resulting in a smooth and even finish without the need for a separate undercoat. Woodwork Defects and When You’ll Need To Use A Wood Primer The affected area should be brushed down with a stiff bristle brush to remove as much powdery material as possible before applying a coat of Weathershield Exterior Stabilising Primer. If the powder is due to salts/efflorescence then the surface should be wiped with a dry cloth to exhaust the salts before coating with Dulux Trade Alkali Resisting primer to eliminate staining. It can then be re-painted in your chosen finish. Using the wrong type of roller can cause foaming of a paint film. Sponge or foam rollers should be avoided with water-based paints. Long pile rollers must be wetted out properly. Foaming happens when air gets into the wet paint film to create air bubbles. When these bubbles burst craters are left on the film surface. Sometimes these craters dry to give an even film. Putting it right Comprehensive Research: Our team dedicates extensive time and effort to research and analyze products, so you can make informed decisions. In most cases, you probably won’t need a primer paint for your interior walls. There are some great high-quality paints on the market which render primer paint for interior walls somewhat redundant. Having said this, there are a few cases where you would want to prime your interior walls for a smooth finish.

Conclusion

MDF Unpainted MDF needs sealing before painting. Use a specialist sealant such as Johnstone's MDF primer followed by an undercoat, before glossing or eggshelling. Newly plastered walls and surfaces are porous, so using a primer before applying subsequent layers of undercoat and paint is key to a great finish.
