The original concept for Alto Knights has been discussed and passed around by different Hollywood production companies since as early as the 1970s, with many significant players opting to turn down the project. It is incredible to think that it took until 2022 for the green light to be given on the film, especially when one considers its successful sister movies in the genre. The official plot synopsis of Alto Knights reads as follows: While Pileggi sometimes includes contradictory testimony from antagonists to the criminals, he does not give any guideposts to let you know who is the bigger bull-crapper. Thus I am not sure how well researched this book is, though Pileggi seems to have have interviewed different people besides Rosenthal. And second is just how similar this story is to the movie. Honestly, even if you take the fact that this guys worked with Scorsese in the movie and the fact that these kind of writers always change a couple of details here and there for narrative purposes, it's pretty impressive how are entire scenes that were adapted completely untouched. I have never been very interested in the crime genre, both fiction and non-fiction. That being said, I could not put this book down (figuratively, since I listened to it). This book was recommended to me by my cousin, and even though it is non-fiction it read like a novel. It's crazy thinking that this is actually the story of someone's life.

Goodfellas is one of my top 3 favorite movies and I now know it has a lot to do with having such great source material. I really enjoyed Wise Guy by Nicholas Pileggi. And when you finally get to the end, and see how Hill escapes a bullet in the head (that was issued to everyone else who knew of the Lufthansa heist) to become a Federal employee, you wonder... is this all okay and correct that this should happen? People are killed en route to this, millions of dollars of property and cash are redistributed among wiseguys, and yet the prime mover becomes another man in lieu of the one he never was. I am not sure. Joo Casino guarantees amazing benefits for its clients. It has designed a unique VIP program with so many perks that you will feel like a real king! You will get an increased bonus amount, increased loyalty points, and can use an exclusive support service. And it's not all – Joo Casino gives you the opportunity to play free games as well!Wiseguy even has some advantages over its still-more-brilliant offspring. A two-and-a-half- hour biopic must necessarily simplify and omit events. In Henry Hill's case, a lot of those events are interesting. I read this book because of how much I love "Goodfellas," and I was not at all disappointed. Overall, the book parallels the film "Goodfellas" quite well. There are famed film lines that are pulled directly from quotes in the book, which furthers the authenticity that I see in the film. The book is an excellent crime saga, like the movie. So Wiseguy is the life story of Henry Hill, a mobster from the 1950s to the 1980s who got caught and eventually turned evidence against his friends in exchange for entry into a Witness Protection Programme – because his friends would have undoubtedly killed him, just as they killed everyone else who threatened their way of life. Hill told everything to Pileggi during a series of meetings that took place in high secrecy, once Hill and his family were established in their new identities. Pileggi’s factual, clear style provides the framework of the book and then we also have Henry’s smooth and engaging voice. His wife Karen is also heard from directly, to add another dimension – what it’s like to marry into the Mafia family. It’s those personal accounts that really drag the reader in, and the screenplay for the film (co-written by Scorsese and Pileggi) lifted the best lines directly from the book, along with using some improvised lines from the cast.

The story of Lefty Rosenthal, his wife Geri and his business partner Tony Spilotro is an explosive(that's a pun) tale. Geri & Tony had a years long affair and they in all likely hood blew up Lefty in his car. The mob was pissed that this affair was messing with their money and bodies started dropping. So, if like me, you’ve seen the film multiple times, is it worth reading the book? Probably not. It’s good but the overwhelming sense of familiarity makes it all feel very recognisable. That said, if you really love the film then you will inevitably still get quite a lot out of reading the book including quite a lot of interesting detail about what the authorities did leading up to Henry Hill's arrest, and the aftermath of his entry into the Federal Witness Program. Again, I don’t remember much about the movie but I got the impression that Rosenthal and Spilotro (I’ve been saying “Spiltoro” all these years, my bad) were closer than they actually were. One ran gambling, the other did robberies and they kind of interacted. Individually, their stories were interesting but really nothing special. And the heart of the tale: Geri, Rosenthal’s wife, was destructive and this played into his tendencies in what was an abusive, loveless marriage with two poor kids at the center of it. It was kind of sad more than anything. Pileggi does a good job of centering the story around mob activity in Vegas; that’s obviously why most of us are reading it anyway. But the real story is the triangle between those three and I just found that depressing. If you ask any mafia movie fan, they will likely tell you that a key ingredient to the success of the genre is the cast. These great mafia epics often recycle and share the same actors, which can sometimes make it feel like they all take place within the same cinematic universe. The wonderful Robert De Niro is one man in particular who has made an entire career out of movies within this genre. When one thinks of mafia movies, one thinks of De Niro and his incredible roles in Goodfellas, The Irishman, Casino, and many more. It wasn’t that Henry was a boss. And it had nothing to do with his lofty rank within a crime family or the easy viciousness with which hoods from Henry’s world are identified. Henry, in fact, was neither of high rank nor particularly vicious; he wasn’t even tough as far as the cops could determine. What distinguished Henry from most of the other wiseguys who were under surveillance was the fact that he seemed to have total access to all levels of the mob world.”
