L Mix is a chaff based feed that is suitable for those prone to laminitis. The alfalfa and chaff ensures increased chewing time, which is beneficial for horses on a restricted diet and can help to maintain a healthy digestive system. It contains no added sugars, molasses or cereal grains and has an extremely low digestible energy. It contains herbs for palatability, pre- and probiotics, and linseed, which is a good source of omega-3. Suitable for horses with intolerances to cereal grains or molasses. Alfa-A Oil combines pure alfalfa with a rape seed oil coating. With 12.5MJ/kg of digestible energy, Alfa-A Oil has an energy or ‘calorie’ level comparable to a conditioning or competition mix/cube but without the sugar and starch. Dengie Alfa-A Oil is very safe to use and can even be used for horses and ponies on box rest.

A nutritionally balanced high fibre feed made from pure chopped and pelleted alfalfa. Healthy Tummy contains a high specification of ingredients proven to support digestive health and maintain correct acidity levels in the digestive tract. Approved by BETA for horses and ponies prone to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome. Chewy is a 26-year-old, 14.hh Connemara cross, who had his first bout of laminitis when he was nine. He suffered recurrent bouts through 2010 and 2011, which lead to testing and diagnosing of Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and PPID (Cushing’s). Ryland was diagnosed with laminitis in May 2021. At the time, he was very overweight with a condition score of 4.5/5 and weighing 670kg on the weighbridge. A year later, he has lost 100kg!

Just been reading a post on Facebook about sugars in chaff written by Andrew Mellon Vets Ltd (no idea who they are, it popped up on my news feed) Hi-Fi Molasses Free is suitable for horses and ponies that require a low sugar and starch ration such as those prone to laminitis that maintain weight with ease The addition of alfalfa pellets in Alfa-A Molasses Free provides interest and means that more slow release energy is supplied per scoop than the rest of the Alfa-A range – great for those with limited appetites As obesity worsens IR, the primary aim is to encourage weight loss and maintain the horse at an ideal bodyweight Ideally, supplementary feed and forage should supply less than 12% NSC dry matter – this is the sum of the water soluble carbohydrate and starch added together

Read the case study John’s Weight Loss Journey After Diagnosis of Laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome! Although soaking hay encourages loss of water soluble carbohydrate, it should not be relied upon to make high NSC hay ‘safe’ because results are highly variableEmma Williams got in touch to arrange a diet clinic after her horse, Jake, was diagnosed with EMS. “I keep him on a cattle farm” explained Emma, “where the grazing is fantastic but not ideal for a 15hh Connemara who’s a good-doer! He gradually piled on the pounds and before I knew it he was very round!” Olly had a lot of natural energy, so Alec didn’t want to give him anything heating, but needed to build muscle and condition.
