Follow up with: 'We are going to share a story together now. It's a very old story that many of you will have heard before. It comes from the country of Russia - a long way from here - but it's also a story that is told all over the world.' The Enormous Turnip– Find out what happens when a very, very large turnip doesn’t want to be pulled out of the ground! The Gigantic Turnip" or "The Enormous Turnip" ( Russian: Репка, Repka, Ukrainian: Ріпка, Ripka, IPA: [ˈrʲepkə], literally "small turnip"; ATU 2044, ‘Pulling up the turnip') is a cumulative Russian fairy tale and Ukrainian fairy tale, collected in Arkhangelsk Governorate and published in 1863 by folklore researcher Alexander Afanasyev in his collection Russian Fairy Tales (tale number 89), a collection not strictly Russian, but which included stories from Ukraine and Belarus alongside Russian tales. [1] [2] [3] The tale is also considered a Ukrainian fairy tale, [3] [4] well-known as adapted by Ivan Franko. [5] [6] Reading to children is a great way to support language development. Even when a child is able to read for themselves, hearing an adult read to them is important for building confidence and expanding vocabulary. Growing Veggies: While this post is about growing carrot tops, you could adapt it to go along with the story by growing turnip tops.

The story is about a class of school children who grew fruit and vegetables in their school garden. I especially liked the drawings of the items they grew with Urdu translation above each picture. The children nurture the crops through summer and when they return to school they found an enormous turnip. The teacher asked the children how they could take this huge turnip out of the ground. The children gave various ideas and it became a competition between the boys and the girls but one more person was needed to pull this turnip out of the ground. The whole school enjoyed the biggest turnip feast ever.

Garden-Themed Process Art: After reading the story, cut up some vegetables – be sure to include a turnip – and let your little ones paint a picture with veggie stamps. Gardening with Kids: There are so many benefits to gardening with kids. With this amazing collection of ideas and activities, your kids can learn about plants, try new foods, and tend their own garden spots. Versions of The Enormous Turnip The Giant Turnip/El Nabo Gigante’, written by Henriette Barkow and illustrated by Richard Johnson, is a dual-language story (written in both English and Spanish) that tells the tale of a class of school children who managed to grow a fantastically large turnip! The story itself, which is of Russian origin, focuses on the importance of teamwork and togetherness.

Several version for children have been penned, including by Konstantin Ushinsky (1864), Vladimir Dal (1870), and Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1940). [ citation needed]It could be read that it is about selfless actions, being willing to help without asking what's in it for you. It is retold as "The Turnip" by Barbara Suwyn in the World Folklore Series' The Magic Egg and Other Tales from Ukraine (1997), edited by Natalie Kononenko. Ask the children to sit quietly and think about what they've seen and heard - and which part of the story they think was the most important for them to remember. Play the video. The duration is 5' 29" and the final words are: '...I want to thank you all the best way I can - by sharing this turnip with all the people and animals in the village so that no-one has to go hungry this winter - not even the mice.' The Enormous Turnip is about an elderly farmer couple who are struggling to remove an enormous turnip from their field. One of my new favorite spring books is The Enormous Turnip. It is an old folktale about a farmer who plants a turnip seed. The turnip grows so big that the farmer can’t harvest it himself. So, he enlists the help of friends and family in a story that points out the importance of teamwork. Storytelling Props: You can easily make storytelling props using toys and supplies you’ve likely got lying around the house. Equally that no amount of help is too small not to matter as it is the mouse that clinches them being able to remove the turnip. Garden in a Glove: When my kids were younger, we put bean seeds in a plastic baggie with a wet paper towel. We taped the baggie to the window and waited for the seeds to sprout. But, here’s a unique twist on that activity! Have your kids start a garden in a glove. The story has been rewritten and adapted numerous times in other languages, for example Polish by Julian Tuwim; [7] Bulgarian by Ran Bosilek, [8] and English by Jan Brett. [9] Plot [ edit ]

Use the story questions to help children to talk about the story and consolidate their recall of the events. This colourful PowerPoint is easy to read, simple to use and great fun for all your students. If they would prefer it in an eBook format, we also have that. There are plenty of Enormous Turnip Activities for Early Years that you can call in to help out, such as this Enormous Turnip Colouring Sheet. Other stories from Twinkl This makes a good marching song. Give children instruments to play (e.g. drums, shakers) and go outdoors to march, sing and play.

The old woman took hold of the old man, the old man took hold of the turnip. They pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So the old woman called over the granddaughter. The dog took hold of the granddaughter, the granddaughter took hold of the old woman, the old woman took hold of the old man, and the old man took hold of the turnip. They pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So the dog called over the cat. Then tell them to try to get to 'their' treat - with you acting as referee to avoid any injuries. It's natural for them to work against each other - to begin with at least - with neither being able to get to the treat. Eventually, they may well work out that if they go together to one chair, then together to the other, they will achieve more than if they pull against one another. If this doesn't happen, you might need to suggest a way forward - eg 'What if you worked together?'
