Literally already using it with adolescents and have tweaked some of the stuff just a tiny bit to make parts of it appropriate to use with adults--it brings everything down to the basic ACT principles in a way I haven't seen before. This was a very exercise focused workbook, especially early on, with the portions I cared most about not coming until the book was almost done. Unfortunately, this move hurts even more than caring; it’s not the biting, alive, occasional hurt of caring and sometimes losing, but the dull, deadening, constant hurt of not living your life in a way that is true to yourself. It does this by constantly categorizing present events, relating them to analyses of the past and predictions of the future and evaluating what has been or might be obtained by action. Having a conceptualized idea of yourself is a bad idea because it will be harder for you to accept experiences that do not align with your conceptualization.This is a slow, slow read, with too many exercies that do not lead you very far into understaning the authors aims. with it, enough to know that I want my own copy, so I can mark it all up (it is a workbook, after all), next time I'm feeling the need. It appeals to neurotic people like me who get a buzz from over-thinking and over-feeling, but then panic when we see ourselves trapped/entangled by the resulting moods that take over.

None of [these techniques] will work simply by reading about them, any more than reading about physical exercise will build your muscles. Harvard psychologist Dan Wegner (1994) has shown that the frequency of the thought that you try not to think may go down for a short while, but it soon appears more often than ever. It’s time to change my whole agenda, not just the moves I make inside a control and avoidance agenda. It is important that you do the activities and I believe it is essential to discuss with another your activities, thoughts and impression.We have been given the great gift of being able to adapt our thinking and behavior intentionally, and to change our circumstances deliberately, to better suit healthy, purposeful living. I find the exercises and quotes useful to me as a practitioner but it’s hard for me to imagine more than a handful of the people I have ever worked with going through this book start to finish. For example, the client who values education might be asked, “What if you received the education, but no one knew. Becoming oriented is not about rumination and worry, but about becoming more aware of what is happening here and now in the present moment. You can say it this way: if you learn to be less reactive to stress through the cultivation of flexibility pivots, the body starts turning off those reaction systems, including genetic expression switches that may have been originally thrown not by you but by your parents and grandparents.

It took me about six months to finish this one, mostly because some sections were so tedious that I had trouble staying with it. I sort of like coming back to this book and review my highlights, so, for that reason, it went up from three to four stars.Thus, when we suppress our thoughts, we not only must think of something else, we have to hold ourselves back from thinking about why we are doing that. Our medications are anti-depressants, or anti-anxiety, or anti-psychotics, as if the only sensible goal is to subtract them.
