In 1930s Liverpool, young Bronwen and Dylan find kindness from an unexpected source when they are frightened by what they think is a ghost on Christmas Eve. This collection of three classic Alfiestories is a charming reminder of just how perfectly Shirley Hughes understands little ones. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills.

Shirley began to write and draw her own picture books when her children were young. Her first book - Lucy and Tom's Day - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, Dogger, and the Alfie series. Her books include the wordless picture book Up and Up, collection of rhymes and poems Out and About, and for the very young The Nursery Collection. In a brand new collection of stories and poems, Alfie has a spooky late-night adventure with an owl and introduces us to his secret den in the garden. We understand that buying kids books can be expensive. That's why we offer a wide range of box sets and series at affordable prices, making it easier for parents, teachers, and libraries to access quality books for children.

Shirley Hughes was born in West Kirby, near Liverpool, in 1927, and studied fashion and dress design at Liverpool Art School, before continuing her studies at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. She started her career as a freelance illustrator in London, illustrating other writers' work, including Noel Streatfeild, Alison Uttley, Ian Seraillier and notably Dorothy Edwards's My Naughty Little Sister series. Shirley Hughes illustrated more than 200 children's books and is one of the best-loved writers for children, known for her beloved classics including the Alfie and Annie Rose stories, and Dogger.

Throughout her career, she won many awards and received many accolades, including a CBE for literature in 2017, and she won the inaugural BookTrust lifetime achievement award in 2015. Hughes passed away in February 2022. She has had such a huge impact on children's literature, picture books and illustration, which has reached many generations. Many famous authors, including Michael Morpurgo, Julia Donaldson and Philip Pullman, paid tribute to her after her death. Featuring all of the best-loved Alfie stories in an attractive carry bag, little ones can join Alfie as he attends a birthday party; splishes and splashes in his new yellow boots; makes friends; visits the fair and much, much more...My particular favourite is the story of Dogger. It's a beautifully told story of a young boy who loses his beloved toy dog. She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. The illustrations are marvellous and I remember them vividly from being read the stories by my parents when I was young. I love that I can continue this tradition with my son!
