IDC Powerharnesses are far and away the easiest of all models to fit and remove: simply slip the large opening over the dog’s head, clip in the chest strap, attach the lead to the top-mounted D-ring and go. Do bear in mind that a harness of this nature won’t necessarily prevent your dog from pulling; it’s simply a kinder, more convenient, safer and comfier alternative to walking with a dog collar and leash. Ease of use: There's less room for error if a harness is easy to put on and remove. A harness with more adjustment points will help you get the best fit for your dog. If the Halti does not stop your dog from pulling, they may experience high levels of discomfort – even if the product is only used on walks. How are Haltis Different to Muzzles?

Double-leads are more complicated to use but have been proven to provide better balance for an unruly dog and thereby reduce pulling. That said, the chest padding alone most certainly has an affect on how the dog responds when walking – just the tiniest tug of the leash will invariably have it walking to heel. A poor-quality harness will only cost you more money in the long run. Buying cheap is a false economy. Not only that but you could find yourself in a dangerous situation if it fails and you lose control of your dog. And it has reflective stitching on the straps so your dog will be plenty visible when walking at night. Walking even small dogs can be a miserable experience if you use the wrong harness. So imagine anchoring yourself to the shoulders of a dog bred for pulling like a Husky. With 1-inch wide straps, this harness is heavier than similar styles and creates too much bulk for smaller dogs. The wider straps help prevent chafing, but the plastic clasps do not have any padding, which may cause discomfort with all-day wear. Petsafe recommends hand-washing the 3-in-1, so it may be difficult to remove odors.Ziv, G. ‘ The Effects of Using Aversive Training Methods in Dogs – A Review’, Journal of Veterinary Behavior (2017) The shape and lightweight design of this dog harness allows for a full range of motion. The soft, yet durable webbing, combined with under-arm sleeves, help keep your dog comfortable and cool during walks. Haug, L. (et al), ‘ Comparison of Dogs’ Reactions to Four Different Head Collars’, Applied Animal Behavior Science (2002) Prevents pulling: We assessed how well it prevented dogs from pulling on leash while walking. We walked for a minimum of 30 minutes on 4-foot leashes.

Durability and washability: We asked professional dog walkers for their opinions on how well these wear over time and whether they hold up after multiple washes. This is designed as a no-pull solution for most dogs, with both a lifting action and front control steering. It’s a great design for flat-nosed dogs who cannot wear a headcollar. We’ve spoken with manufacturers and interviewed everyday users. On top of that, we’ve called on our own experiences, gathered the thoughts of dog trainers. Then, we actually tested these products ourselves. Baker prefers a standard 4- to 6-foot-long leather leash for dog walking. She recommends avoiding retractable leashes, which present a variety of safety concerns for both dogs and their walkers. Many of the best cute dog leashes can be used for a dog who pulls. Why don't we recommend prong, choke, and e-collars? Many people report that their dogs don’t seem as happy when wearing a Halti. Their tails and ears may droop, they hold their heads lower, and don’t seem as excited on walks.

Using head harnesses like this for longer periods has led to distress and severe consequences reported by owners.
