Description

Michael's books have been translated into many languages including Chinese, Bulgarian and Hungarian, Hebrew and Japanese. He travels all over the UK and abroad talking to people of all ages at literary festivals, telling his stories and encouraging them to tell theirs. This is athree-session spelling seed for the book Beowulfby Michael Morpurgo. Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014. The story itself revolves around the Scandinavian warrior known as Beowulf and his deeds against three monster antagonists: Grendel; Grendel's mother, a sea-hag; and, finally, the death-dragon of the deep. All creatures of darkness! Beowulf is probably the most altruistic hero I've heard of. It's an heroic legend and major themes are honor, loyalty, bravery and glory. It's also bloody and dramatic. You can totally guess what's gonna happen but it's worthy and amazingly well told. Michael Morpurgo is not some random fella, it seems. Ever seen the movie "War Horse"? He wrote the novel.⠀ Overjoyed, Hrothgar showers Beowulf with gifts and treasure at a feast in his honor. Songs are sung in praise of Beowulf, and the celebration lasts late into the night. But another threat is approaching. Grendel’s mother, a swamp-hag who lives in a desolate lake, comes to Heorot seeking revenge for her son’s death. She murders Aeschere, one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisers, before slinking away. To avenge Aeschere’s death, the company travels to the murky swamp, where Beowulf dives into the water and fights Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair. He kills her with a sword forged for a giant, then, finding Grendel’s corpse, decapitates it and brings the head as a prize to Hrothgar. The Danish countryside is now purged of its treacherous monsters. Beowulf was a mighty hero who went on a quest to save Hereot {from gruesome villains} w hen he accidently found his match.

Will fire imaginations and elicit the heart-pumping, wide-eyed response that has kept this tale alive and vigorous through the ages.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review) Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments My favourite character was Wiglat h because he was loyal to his king and he didn’t run away whe n he needed them the most. He was extremely brave! The following bundle of resources is aimed at supporting the teaching and learning of the text: Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo. There are appropriately 14 sessions worth of materials that give pupils the opportunity to practise and repeat skills through short writing opportunities. This includes PPT’s, differentiated worksheets and supporting materials. The Danes and Geats celebrate their victory not knowing that Grendel’s mother is also about to terrorise Heorot, seeking vengeance for the death of her son. She enters Heorot, seizes Hrothgar's oldest friend and makes away with the severed arm of Grendel. Michael Morpurgo has thrilled and delighted huge numbers of young readers since becoming a children’s author in the early 1970s," Wood said. "Action for Children’s Arts is delighted to recognise Michael’s outstanding contribution by presenting him with the J M Barrie Award 2016. His work will undoubtedly, like Peter Pan, stand the test of time, making him a truly worthy recipient of this award." Complemented by Michael Foreman's vivid illustrations, this epic tale is skillfully spun, with both the accessibility and the integrity it takes to capture a new audience. Lovers of superheroes and monsters, compassionate rulers and fearsome battles will find this retelling as enthralling as it is tragic.

I felt like I was experiencing it all with them. The minute I read some of part 1 in the book I really wanted to read on but I couldn’t. I read it and even though it was fictional, it made me think about how hard it must be to write some books. Wouldn’t you be sad if one of your best friends died?I pointed out some of the interesting history, and the interpolated Christianity which didn't fit the original story - and we waded through the gore. They know about Beowulf, and that'll do for now. I liked this book , the story contains friendship, ad venture and people that care, although some of it didn’t really catch my attention. Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. In this retelling, British Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo breathes new vitality into the oldest English epic, originally written around 1000 A.D.--the tale of Beowulf, a Geat warrior who battles three evils so powerful that they destroy entire kingdoms. Standing head and shoulders above his comrades, Beowulf single-handedly saves Denmark from Grendel, a "merciless murderous ogre," as well as from his sea-hag mother. But it is Beowulf's third terrible battle, against the "death-dragon of the deep," in which he truly meets his match.
