I’m really interested in the 12 bay version of this model. Normally I’d just go for the Synology, but the third party drive warnings would be infuriating on the Synology 12 bays. I am trying to built something very similar but with a Supermicro CSE-PTJBOD-CB2. I googled in vain to find its manual. Would somebody have it? SilverStone Technology CS280B ( specs): Tiny Mini-ITX case, 8 hot-swappable 2.5” drive bays, 2 internal 2.5” drive bays, super-compact design.

Hey guys… If you guys dont want it standing up…. you can lay it down with vents down….. and put something under the NAS , in all 4 corners… taa-daa 🙂 vents-heating problem solved 🙂 hehe SSH — (Secure Shell) A shell terminal that uses command line to access the NAS operating system directly over a network using a client like PuTTYHello, great video, well I am new with this NAS thing, I want to buy the same model, DS1821+, and I want to populate it with 8 14tb drives… but I have a question… Is it also necessary to populate it with the SSDs NVME??… Thanks. Under the 8-bay 2.5” cage is a single 2.5” drive cage for an OS SSD. This cage can be removed if space is needed underneath. Technically, this makes the unit a 9x 2.5″ chassis. SilverStone CS280 HDD Cage Note* Regarding Length and Sound – Yep, this is a *LOOOOOOOONG* Review. However, for many users working in the Video Production and SMB market, this is likely to be their FIRST NAS after relying on cloud for years and years, so I have to cover *EVERYTHING*, as well as why PCIe4 in NAS is such a big deal! There will be a much, much shorter ‘Before you Buy’ 15min video on the QNAP TVS-874 NAS Soon. Additionally, this is my 2nd attempt at uploading this video and both times, the YT processing seems to dislike the recording (with audio syncing in/out at times). I am in discussion with YouTube over this, as these sync issues are not present in the original production before it was uploaded! Apologies for this and hopefully it will get straightened out soon. In terms of RAM size, a minimum of 8GB is fine, 16GB is recommended, 32GB is overkill (unless you like to live dangerously ;))

The only thing of note during the test was the LSI 9211 HBA had been left in RAID (IR) mode. Following the very comprehensive instructions I found here: https://nguvu.org/freenas/Convert-LSI-HBA-card-to-IT-mode/ this took less than 5 minutes to flash to the correct version of IT mode firmware.Hello I’m planing my first FreeNAS build. I’m colorist and need a shared storage solution to work direclty out of. Most of what I do as a Mac Consultant is Synology Server support. But I’m totally terrified of this alerts on my own Synology Servers and my clients servers too. The only thing of note is that the supposedly ‘matched’ constant speed silent fans are running at different speeds (1000rpm and 1100rpm). The fan is supposed to run at 1050 RPM so I assume a that a tiny variation in speed, probably due to static pressure, is causing one to round up and one to round down.

If you have experience in building servers, selecting the best case for your NAS will be simple, because you will know which dimensions will work for you and how many drive bays are necessary for your servers. Those who are new shall know, HDD trays that are enclosed or hot-swap accessible from the exterior are both suitable choices for NAS, even a separate NAS DiskStation is an option for the big support. You can determine what you need for a personalized server case and prepare yourselves to meet the fundamental requirements such as PSU size, and particular height CPU cooler, and then look for ITX form factor motherboards.FTP/SFTP — (Secure/File Transfer Protocol) Common way of transferring files over a network using a utility like FileZilla FreeNAS — Supports Windows SMB, Apple AFP, Time Machine, and Unix NFS, as well as FTP and WebDAV with many advanced features & add-ons. Norco ITX-S8 ( specs): Mini-ITX case, 8 x 3.5” hot-swappable HDD bays, 1 x 2.5” internal drive bay, and uses a 1U ATX power supply. However what eventually moved me to build my 3rd gen NAS was running out of disk slots. The RAID acronym ‘Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks’ is ironic when you have to keep buying larger more expensive disks to replace perfectly good smaller ones in your limited slots! Thunderbolt card coming to TVS-h874? What’s happening to the 4-bay Thunderbolt 4 NAS? When are we gonna see new Thunderbolt NAS fr QNAP?I have bought the smaller 4 bays version (TVS-H474). I would love to upgrade the CPU (Pentium Gold G7400) to an Intel Core. Looking at your video, it looks like this is the exact same cooling system you have with your much more powerfull Intel Core i5-12400. Therefore I have the feeling my unit would be able to cool down the same CPU but I might be wrong. How were your CPU temps under heavy load? How fast was the very little fan spinning under these conditions? I am afraid this upgrade would turn my NAS into an airport. Thank you! Now let’s start with the hardware and keep in mind, it’s very flexible. You don’t even have to use a Mini- ITX motherboard if you don’t want to (although you’d need to choose a larger case). You don’t need to buy everything new (some RAID cards I recommend are used). Used server hardware is fine except for hard drives (more on that later). Motherboard One of the more interesting things I’ve noticed is the staying power of Mini-ITX-sized cases, especially the ones that hold enough hard drives to host a DIY NAS build. I’ve been building my own computers for a really long time and I’m spoiled in that I’m constantly seeing new case designs or revisions of old favorites’ designs on an ongoing basis. But for DIY NAS builds, I’m usually seeing the same cases build after build. I‘m looking forward to the T6-423 version. After watching a lot of videos and reading I went for Terramaster 🙂
