As with the TV series, these movies look great, though they were never in as bad a shape as the show. Harkening back to the 1940s Fleischer Studios Superman animated films, Batman: The Animated Series went retro, drawing upon a “Dark Deco” aesthetic and the look and feel of Tim Burton’s Batman feature film.

And with over an hour and a half of bonus material both new and old, this set comes Highly Recommended to both new and dedicated fans of the caped crusader. Wearing many names - the Dark Knight, The World's Greatest Detective, the Caped Crusader and Gotham's Greatest Hero - he battled tragic foes like The Joker, Penguin, Mr.Freeze: SubZero (1989 - reviewed here) apparently convinced the studio that there was significant fan interest in a Blu-ray box set of the entire series. The WB home video division will use the same 1080p masters, but there's no guarantee they'll include identical discs.

This series of The Batman covered the early years of the cape and cowl starting into Bruce Wayne's third year as a vigilante. Sure digital copies would have been nice like the Batman 66 box set, but I am just happy having this amazing series on bluray at long last. Occasionally, grain thickens and gives a bit of a flicker effect, but those moments are so brief you could blink and miss them entirely. Along with Warner’s new 2001: A Space Odyssey in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, this is a strong contender for the Best Blu-ray Release of 2018.

Each copy comes with a series of lenticular cards, along with three exclusive mini Funko Pop vinyl figures--Batman, The Joker, and Harley Quinn. It'd be nice if they brought this out in the UK too, but it always seems to be a coin toss whether they'll bother or not -- and then another coin toss for whether it'll have the art book / packaging or just be a regular case with no bells and whistles. The show continues to be one of the truest adaptations of the comic books, while also being approachable to newcomers.

The series’ episodes were remastered from the 35mm interpositive sources, which were scanned at 2K resolution.

The cast and crew of Season 4 talk about the characters, storylines, and production of the fourth season and how the animation and story had changed since the show first started. It’s also widely regarded as the best version of the Batman story and characters ever captured on film, the most true to the character’s comic book roots. Voices of the Knight (Featurette) – Actors Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Adriene Barbeau, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. Arkham Asylum: Examine the Top-Secret Case Files of the Dark Knight's Many Foes: Two Face (Featurette) – Discussing Batman's key nemesis are Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, James Tucker, and Dan Riba.

Arkham Asylum: Examine the Top-Secret Case Files of the Dark Knight's Many Foes: Clayface (Featurette) – Clayface personnel file revealed by Bruce Timm, Dan Riba and James Tucker. Combined with a terrific voice cast drawn from theater and the ranks of great character actors, as well as fully orchestrated music (including a theme by Danny Elfman and regular music composed by Shriley Walker), Batman: The Animated Series was an instant and iconic classic. Morally ambiguous stories, emotionally complex characters, poignant and tragic endings… all of this was new to TV animation. Lest you think “Almost Got ‘Im” is the only anthology episode in the series, meet “Legends of the Dark Knight,” the one where a trio of Gotham teens tells each other what they’ve heard about what Batman’s really like. Arkham Asylum: Examine the Top-Secret Case Files of the Dark Knight's Many Foes: The Riddler (Featurette) – This file discusses The Riddler and how creators differentiated him from the Batman '66 Riddler with: Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, Andrea Romano, Eric Radomski and Dan Riba.Rino Romano ( Spider-Man Unlimited, Curious George) heads the cast as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Episodes are listed with the major characters and villains that appear therein (aside from Batman himself) for easy reference. Concepting Harley Quinn" (Featurette) – Producer Paul Dini discusses how Harley Quinn was incorporated into the series. Robin Rising: How the Boy Wonder's Character Evolved (Featurette) – The evolution of Dick Grayson from young ward to crime fighter. Arkham Asylum: Examine the Top-Secret Case Files of the Dark Knight’s Many Foes: Villain spotlight featurettes.
