Description

Hide and seek, a common enough game but in 1985 three year old Lily Murphy despite endless seeking is never found and most believe she has drowned. Very strong characters and a plot with enough points of difference from others in the genre meant I was gripped from start to finish. However Joanna may have more of a connection to this case than just living in the house the Murphy's used to live in.

year-old Joanna forfeits her career to become a SAHM (girl, 11; boy, 9; girl, 3) when she and her husband, 49, move into a house in a closed community where he grew up outside of Dublin. With the help of her new neighbours, Joanna attempts to find out what happened to Lily and what role she played in it. This one has some really excellent creepy vibes, something that’s been lacking in a lot of the thrillers I’ve read recently. This is very much a character led drama - there are a lot of characters to keep track of, which I did struggle with at first but is definitely worth sticking with as all of a sudden, woosh, I was gripped!

Andrea Mara is one of those authors who as soon as I hear she has a new book out I just have to drop everything and get stuck in. With some people knowing more than they were letting on, we don't find out what happened to Lily until the very end. I for one had several moments within this book where I was left gasping for breath, with a tightness in my chest and a panicked pulse. Joanna becomes obsessed with finding out what happened and the ensuing story is tense and gripping, showing how the past is never really left behind and making it an incredibly hard book to put down.It might be this history, it might be because she has a three year old daughter, or maybe because her husband grew up nearby but Joanna becomes obsessed with discovering what happened to little Lily. Having read countless domestic suspense novels about a child gone missing, I found this one to be refreshingly different and a cut above the rest. This is an intriguing thriller told in present day by Joanna, who has just realised her new home has links to a tragic mystery, and in flashbacks to the early eighties where we meet the neighbourhood then in the time. And Joanna also has a past she doesn’t want to reveal, not even to her family, and is much closer to the truth about what happened to Lily than she wants to admit!
