When I caught ‘Mad Men’s HDTV broadcast on AMC, I endured an onslaught of blocky artifacts and flushed skintones that continually distracted me from the excellent production values of the show. The special features are spread out over all discs in every season and there is no listing of what special feature is on what disc. If your item has arrived damaged or is faulty, we will make this right as soon as possible, either by sending a replacement item to you or refunding your account. The series’ warm palette holds up exceedingly well in spite of a variety of interior and exterior lighting schemes, allowing the characters’ yellow-hued homes to look every bit as good as the firm’s brightly lit offices. Yes, the series’ pacing and subject matter may not be everyone’s flavor, but solid writing and stunning performances help this one stand out from the crowd.

In this highly competitive, all white, male-dominated environment, the indefatigable Don Draper is the top ad executive, but there are plenty of young guns eager to topple him from his perch. As a result, the show’s plotlines, character development, and central themes generate plenty of unsettling reactions that make it difficult to root for the whole of Sterling Cooper’s greedy and distasteful workforce.

Any true substance is confined to the bonuses - the moving tribute to forgotten freedom fighter Medgar Evers; in full, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech; the lid off how the tobacco industry promoted a habit increasingly recognized as so harmful; the part advertising played in the 1964 Johnson-Goldwater Presidential campaigns: women seeking a fair deal in the workplace.

Weiner doesn’t pull any punches, exposing the show’s fictional firm for what it is -- an impenetrable boys’ club whose existence is fueled by other successful boys’ clubs. The design is as stylish and tasteful as you'd expect from the series itself, with a number of additional collectible materials included such as a 16-page episode guide, art cards, floor plans and headed notepaper. As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. However around that is a nicely layered sound design that is intended to create atmosphere rather than draw attention to itself. In fact, there isn’t a single moment in the course of this season’s thirteen episodes that merits any critical knuckle-rapping.A man's world this, those portrayed determined to exploit to the full The American Dream - their profession dedicated to convincing the gullible affluent they cannot do without the products so flamboyantly advertised. The show delves into the complex and often dark world of advertising in the 1960s, while also exploring the personal lives and struggles of the characters.
