The SpillNot employs simple physics in keeping your coffee cup from spills and breakage. By carrying the moving cup containing liquid, several forces act on the cup, and consequently on the liquid contained inside. If balanced forces are applied to a cup of liquid (…whether at rest or moving with a constant velocity), the liquid remains virtually undisturbed. However, once an unbalanced force is applied to the cup (ex. A force greater to the right than to the left), the cup will accelerate. The liquid’s mass will not accelerate with the cup due to its fluid nature; instead, accelerating the liquid will cause the liquid to spill out of the cup; due to inertia and the liquid’s inability to keep up with the accelerating cup. If you are struggling with caring for yourself, which includes getting enough to eat and drink, consider asking for a health and social care needs assessment. Since the Care Act 2014 came into power in April 2015, anyone who appears to need care and support can request an assessment from their local council, irrespective of their income or savings. The Act also places a statutory duty on local authorities to assist their residents to prevent a deterioration in their health and well-being. The 'prevention' strategies of many local authorities includes the early provision of equipment and services to help prevent, delay or reduce the development of needs for care and support.

Difficulties with initiating or carrying out movement may occur in later stages. This might affect all actions required to get food to the mouth and then to eat it. Verbal prompting and physical assistance may be needed. Finger foods or less ‘messy’ foods might help. As dementia progresses, swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) become more common. If a person has difficulty chewing and swallowing, you are advised to seek an appointment with a speech and language therapist. Having softer foods might help. After 7 years of marriage, this morning I had my first ever cup of tea in bed from my husband, made possible by the SpillNot. My husband is tetraplegic and so carrying things between rooms, especially drinks, has always been very difficult. But not anymore! For me, it’s always the small things that mean the world and I felt very spoilt this morning. Thank you for a fantastic product….I think I could get used to this! with a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon his/her ability to carry out everyday activities;Jake: But does it really work? So I am known to be that guy that spills drinks because I'm clumsy, I got a lot going on in my head, so this could be a big deal. If you have not had an opportunity to discuss your eating and drinking difficulties with a professional, you are strongly advised to seek an assessment of your situation. He continued: ‘ I began working with my mum on her sewing machine to try and solve some of these gripping issues. Together we explored a number of prototypes, testing and experimenting with different methods, materials and designs. Finally, we came up with the basic designs which have developed into the core of the Active Hands Gripping aids we sell today.’ Despite that the SpillNot does not offer itself easily to quantitative laboratory work, you will be impressed by how easy it is to use. It is not a quantitative demonstration tool. On the contrary, its best use is to demonstrate that the study of physics can be used to solve practical problems in ordinary life. The bonus is that it makes the classic centripetal force demonstrations much easier to perform. Jake: This is the perfect thing for something I never knew I wanted to do, like competitive drink twirling.

Rob tested out the SpillNot at home. His wife, Jo, was delighted to get a cup of tea in bed on Mother’s Day:

Alternatively, one could use the tilt of the SpillNot to determine the force. This can be accomplished by perhaps taking a picture or still-frame of a person swinging the apparatus. Then, with a protractor, measure the angle at which the rope falls below the horizontal. One can then compare a and v2/R by using tan(Ɵ)=a/g This lab does not have much to offer pedagogically beyond what a ball on a string can teach, however the device itself is the hook that gets kids interested. It is novel and exciting to be spinning a cup ominously out with the plane of the fluid nearly perpendicular to the floor! Use your SpillNot for carrying mugs, glasses and small bowls. You can remove the non-slip coaster (included) and use it to protect furniture. You can also use the coaster as a jar opener.

Josh: The reason why people usually spill drinks while walking is that they apply a lateral force to the cup, which pushes on the liquid and causes the liquid to slosh up and over the side. But the SpillNot has a very flexible handle, it has no shear strength, and that means that if I apply a lateral force to the handle, it can't be translated to the side of the cup. Instead, everything swings together. Gravity acts equally on the tray and the cup and the liquid.

Because the SpillNot handle is flexible webbing, it is very strong in terms of its tensile strength, ability to pull or exert a force in the direction of Fn, above, but it cannot exert a lateral force to the tray or cup. Thus when the force, Fh, is applied to the handle and it begins to accelerate, the cup and tray don’t move much, resulting in a tilt to the whole system (as depicted in the drawing above).

Jake: Let's pretend we're at the clubs right now. We got our cool drinks at the club. We're just sittin' here like, "Oh, hey! 'Sup friends at the club? We just got our drinks. They ain't spillin' anywhere. Oh, oh!" - Pretty good! It works pretty friggin' good. But we haven't yet done the full windmill that we saw in that commercial earlier. That's the big test. Medha: We have the inventor of the product, Josh, who has sent us a video about how his product works. You may be provided with equipment and services as a preventative measure, before a needs assessment is done. If, on assessment, your needs are high enough to qualify for help from the local authority, they will then look at your income and savings to see whether you will need to pay towards any future services you receive. These services might include disability equipment including alarms or telecare, adaptations to your home, help from a carer, or the delivery of meals or residential care. Carrying an Open Beverage with the SpillNot. Now suppose an open beverage is being carried on a SpillNot rather than directly by the cup handle. Instead of abruptly moving the handle of the cup, the person abruptly applies a horizontal force, Fh, to the top part of the SpillNot handle.

Jake: That was some physics, forces acting on forces, with the slope, and then there's Isaac Newton over here waving at you. Like, very confusing stuff, but I think I get what he's saying. Eating and drinking both involve many different decisions, actions and movements. They are complex activities and can be disrupted in many ways. For anyone, whether able bodied or not, it is best to be sitting upright in a well-supported position. You should be sat close to the table or tray, which should be roughly at the height of your elbow. This means that the table can be used to support your forearms if required. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. It often indicates a user profile. Jake: Honestly think this thing will work really well. I was thinking ahead, and I made you some nice chai tea. But you can't drink it unless it survives the spin test. If it's on the ground, you can't drink it. f) Measure the horizontal radius (if the velocity is sufficient then Rhoriz = R is nearly true, otherwise Rhoriz = R cos θ)
