When Billy can’t find the informant, he wonders if Kate is secretly harboring her, since the two grew close during Kate's weeks undercover. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. These are not topics often covered in books on rewilding and I commend his bravery both in pursuing these ideas and in describing his experiences.

They say that knowledge is power, well maybe its not about what we know - but its about having faith in what we don't. This is a beautiful book and should be read by whoever understands what man has done to the natural world and how important is its restoration for future generations.Joanna Lumley Stunningly beautiful, immensely sad, immensely uplifting, this is a book of grief and joy and wonder and renewal. In her recent book Wilder, Millie Kerr surveys projects around the globe that are advancing rewilding goals large and small – and creating building blocks of hope. In it, the British financier and environmentalist recounts the accidental death of his teenage daughter Iris, and brings readers along on his journey to find some meaning in the aftermath. Goldsmith describes the terrifying rate at which plants and animals are disappearing from our countryside.

I feel the same rage against such mindless persecution, this is what drove me to leave the UK and find work in the wildlife conservation of other wilder nations. She would be in conversation with Ben Goldsmith, author of the wonderful God is an Octopus (check out my review below). A beautiful book, and a true tribute to the spirit of Iris, which I shall hold with me for some time. There's a reason We Are Legion was named Audible's Best Science Fiction Book of 2016: Its irresistibly irreverent wit!I have never suffered the kind of loss that Ben Goldsmith has, but I think I can far better imagine it having read this book. Intensely readable, poetic, truthful, wise and wonderful, this will live with me for a very long time. George Monbiot An extraordinarily powerful and moving journey through the darkest of griefs to the enduring love, hope and renewal of the natural world. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish.

Learn nine essential ways to detox your mindset, feel lighter and more energised, to live a happier and more fulfilling life. It was while in the countryside for a week – a solo escape with nothing to do but walk and read – that I spotted Isabella Tree’s now landmark book Wilding on the bookshelf in my little “shepherd’s hut.As the seasons continued to change and the world carried on without Iris, Ben sought ways to come to terms with his grief. I’m not so sure I would ever be persuaded to take the psychedelic substance that Goldsmith takes at the end of the book - not once, but twice. Anyone that has suffered the death of a young friend or family member will recognise the motions Goldsmith goes through: the ‘if onlys’, obsessing over details, curiously noting preternatural elements – every one inexplicably filled with significance and pathos, the outer body experience that somehow your human story line doesn’t fit within the world around you. To be clear, this is not a detailed account of that ecological undertaking, but rather a raw portrait of a man drowning in grief.

The events of Goldsmith’s book take place over the first year of Covid-19 lockdowns; an uncanny but fitting backdrop. Ultimately, though, it was the continuous lure of the natural world that allowed Ben to find hope and healing in nature.

Goldsmith has written an extraordinary book, God is an Octopus, about his journey through grief and his exploration of the afterlife. She had been driving a mule – a bit like a golf buggy – across a newly mown field at the family farm, Cannwood. That evening, on my daily sunset hike, I saw the forest I walked through and the rolling hills I climbed with fresh eyes.
