Description

If you are looking for an intermediate guide to Wicca and some lovely Sabbat rituals this is the book for you. I think that some of the minor characters were a little two dimensional, but it would be hard to flesh out and thoroughly develop numerous characters in a story of this size. It then goes on to describe the Celtic festivals of the year and how a hedge witch views them, along with a good section on the elements and the magic that they hold. Hedge witchery in general is experiential and a slow and natural progression of interests and events often experienced from childhood and persisting all through your life.

There are some outdated and even problematic aspects, but the underlying teachings and techniques for ritual and trancework are very insightful. Somehow, the key around her neck, left to her by her mother, makes her to believe that her mother’s captured somewhere. Her lyrical letters, accompanied by pen-and-ink sketches, bring the reader to an understanding of the solitary witch's lifestyle and beliefs. This path teaches you how to create a more beneficial life for all beings through traditional folkloric knowledge, a relationship with nature, and the art of hedge riding (trance work). Anyone, Witch or otherwise, who feels a true affinity with Nature will appreciate the explanations and teachings found in these books. The second half of the book was slightly redeeming, discussing trance work (albeit from a heavily Wiccan angle).

In the days of mass production and rather generic feeling tomes with zero feeling of nostalgia, this is a much-welcomed find. There was some interesting information, and much more original than the first half, plus justified the title somewhat. The only downside to this book is there are no pictures of the crystals in question, making it hard to identify crystals you may already have or encounter during your practice.I don't know if it is just the comparison to the LOTR book I was reading at the same time (which is very big, with quite white pages, which are for the most part also nicely textured, but the pages with the illustrations (and they are lovely illustrations) are glossy and plasticy and make my skin crawl).

Set in a modern day magical world, The Hedge Witch follows Rowan on a summer visit to relatives in a small town, nestled in the Welsh countryside, before she starts sixth form. However a good read for some ritual tips, though I'd recommend one of Beth's other fine works ahead of this. Rae is a psychic counsellor, and her best-selling works include The Hedge Witch, The Hedge Witch's Way and Spellcraft for Hedge Witches. This section contains very basic correspondences and how to create your own spells, but she does support the Wiccan idea of harming none. I've come to the realization that I'm probably not suited to a coven, even if we had some in my area, but I still want to learn. Her lyrical letters, accompanied by delicate pen-and-ink sketches, bring the reader towards a deeper understanding of the solitary witch’s lifestyle and beliefs. The book is presented in a series of letters sent to two apprentices who wish to follow the path and are seeking guidance and advice.
