Size Range: R (72 inches x 23 inches) to XL (78 inches x 29 inches) and a double (78 inches x 53 inches) Nice, I’m stoked that the NEMO worked out for you! And congrats on making it 100 miles out there. I’m not sure what it’s like hiking on the East Coast this time of year, but I know that out West it is freaking cold!

Outdoor Life Best Backpacking Sleeping Pads of 2023 | Outdoor Life

The mat alone must be able to insulate me against the cold ground, also above the tree limit for example. One doesn't need to sleep on an airmat to set it under stress, it's surely enough to carry it around every day.Head over to our full review at the link in our bio to see why we think this pad is such an awesome value. So the risk to destroy an airmat with sparks is relatively high if one sleeps next to the fire. A long lasting selfinflating airmat isn't cheap as you know. R-value is a measure of a sleeping pad’s ability to prevent the loss of body heat to the cold ground. The higher the R-value, the warmer the pad will be.

Mummy shape: Shaves weight while still providing plenty of cushion to sleep on for a six-foot-tall hiker. The most awesome thing about this air mattress is the ‘internal stabiliser’ that makes sure your weight is distributed evenly while you snooze. I hiked with the smaller version of this pad on the Appalachian Trail, and though not an ultralight choice, I got excellent sleep night after night – which makes it worth its weight in gold. This pad is well suited for thru-hiking. The insulation factor means it can be used functionally even on the coldest nights, yet I never had issues with it being too warm in the summer months. It held up pretty well for most of the PCT where I used it and has only recently received its first pinhole. As mentioned above, even on the slightly taller side of the spectrum, this pad is plenty of bed to get cozy on.

Now I have always had mixed feelings about double pads. Kind of like double sleeping bags – I love the concept – but the reality does not always produce the best night’s sleep. NEMO Switchback Ultralight Sleeping Pad Review NEMO Switchback Ultralight Sleeping Pad Review

While the Sleepingo is incredibly affordable and performs decently, there are some important notes. This pad offers the least amount of padding compared to the rest of the air-construction pads we tested. It also doesn't have an ASTM-tested R-rating, which makes the stated value a bit less valuable than it would be otherwise. Due to this, we feel it's best to use this pad in fair weather only. I haven’t used a Steripen in about eight years, but I wasn’t a huge fan and ended up returning mine. Mainly I didn’t like carrying another electronic device (plus batteries). However, I imagine they’ve improved quite a lot since then (lighter, smaller, rechargeable). Maybe I should revisit the technology to see how it’s progressed. Durable materials: The Xtherm boasts the sturdiest bottom fabric of any pad on this list (70D nylon on the bottom and 30D on top). Now that the results are in, I hope you find it easier to choose a sleeping pad for your travel style 🙂 It’s an entirely personal choice, as both have pros and cons. Closed-cell foam (CCF) pads are more versatile and durable than inflatables at a fraction of the cost. They set up instantly and can double as sit pads and yoga mats.As you see, that's more my personal minimalistic and nomadic lifestyle than a shorter recreational hiking tour. And apart from the fact that I keep my stuff easily portable, I don't really plan to walk really long distances with the heavy version. Space blanket” insulation: It really works! I’ve slept directly on snow well below freezing with this pad paired with a 20-degree quilt and slept just fine. Another point is, that we have nearly exclusively pine forests around Berlin, often one can't find hardwood for the fire.
