This book also feels so special because of the calming 'atmosphere' you get from being in the Dalai Lama's home and his presence. When the cat is not discussing Buddhism but is instead behaving -- as a cat-- lovers of cats will recognize their favorite animal. So instead, I've downloaded the follow-up novel - The Art of Purring - and am currently fully enjoying the continuing exploits of HHC!

I also enjoyed observations of daily life in Dharamsala where the self-styled Tibetan government in exile works in a town full of hippies, scholars, and tourists. HHC’s observations of the world are very honest and the way that she notes and observes the changes in the characters as they develop throughout the book were lovely. HHC is still arrogant and is far too preoccupied with food to give out any major doses of affection, but she was an entertaining voice.The main hero is a cat, the Dalai Lama's cat, flirting, ruminating on energy and dharma, pondering psychology, quoting 'The Great Gatsby'. I feel like I learned more about myself and Buddhism in these pages, and also gained a sense of hopefulness for the future. For someone who almost never reads self-help books and knows very little about Buddhism, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the story.
