The Director`s Cut is 844 seconds (14:04 min.) longer than the cinema version! The runtime of all edited scenes amounts to 916 seconds (15:16 min.). As a result of the new Blu-ray transfer, we can see more of Supergirl in flight without the noticeable congestion and the visual composition is less distracting. The brighter and more vibrant colors especially during the special effects scenes, which deserve more a more detailed picture. The Director's Cut looks brighter, but the International Version looks more natural.

The film was released in the United Kingdom on 19 July 1984 and in the United States on 21 November 1984, but failed to impress critics and audiences alike, [8] while also underperforming at the box-office. Dunaway and O'Toole earned Golden Raspberry Award nominations for Worst Actress and Worst Actor, respectively. However, Slater was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actress. The film's failure ultimately led producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind to sell the Superman film rights to The Cannon Group, Inc. in 1986. in 1984. (Look closely at Supergirl's initial emergence from the water in screenshot 12; the wire pulling her would be digitally erased in a Both the International Version and Director's Cut of Supergirl are presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. There is some slight grain present in both versions, with some heavy grain apparent in a few brief scenes. A bit of shimmer is also noticeable, but very infrequent. Overall though, the prints for both look terrific for a film that's sixteen years old with vibrant color and accurate flesh tones. Bianca mentions she would prefer a ceiling fan, but unfortunately it isn't her house. In the DC she can be seen asking Selena what she needs the prisoners for, while in the IV her question can be heard in the OFF during a shot of Jimmy in his cage. The Blu-ray disc carrying the International Version is encoded in 1080/AVC MPEG-4, and letterboxed in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Watching this disc isn't an eye-popping, visual revelation, but the improvements are definitely noticeable. When I first saw the International Version on DVD (as released by Anchor Bay in 2002), I felt that the picture looked a little "off." It appeared too tightly cropped on the sides and bottom as compared to the Director's Cut DVD and when referencing my full-screen laserdisc. With this Blu-ray, it appears that all the "zooming in" has been corrected as the movie looks less cramped than its original digital release, and even better than the Director's Cut. Limbs are no longer cut off awkwardly and objects appear more properly centered. (Please note that I do not own nor have I ever seen the 2006 DVD release from Warner Bros.)

The extras for Supergirl all reside on the International Versions' disc. For starters and probably the best extra for fans is the informative and insightful audio commentary by the director, Jeannot Szwarc, and the special project consultant, Scott Michael Bosco. Its filled with all sorts of neat tidbits and historical facts concerning the film. You also get the original 1984 "Making of Supergirl" featurette, which is hosted by Faye Dunaway. It runs about fifty minutes in length, and contains interviews with quite a few of the cast and crew, including Helen Slater. Also present are the theatrical trailers, television spots, storyboards, a still gallery, talent bios, closed captions, and the THX Opti-mode calibration test for audio and video signals.

Other scenes involve Linda Lee making a temporary home in the city of Midvale, Illinois, and an extended version of the tractor sequence in which the possessed machine runs amok on the Midvale streets and kills a civilian. This alleged death scene does not appear in either the International or the 2000 Director's Cut. Another cut scene shows Supergirl unable to find the Omegahedron because Selena keeps it in a lead box, demonstrating that Supergirl's limitations are similar to those of her cousin. The Phantom Zone scenes are also longer. than equal to the challenge. If the rest of Supergirl were up to the level of Goldsmith's work (andThe DC has a bigger picture section, the IV seems to be somewhat zoomed. The movie actually benefits from the larger film format, as it includes body parts and important objects which were in the zoomed IV. The following images provide an example of the differences cited above.

Supplements:

The famous broadcast scene in which Nigel takes the coffer of shadows and keeps it as a memento. This scene is also extended as Nigle runs into the lady he met at Selena's and goes off with her.

I had never seen all of Supergirl before, but had wanted to, being a big fan of the first two Superman movies. I have to say that Supergirl disappointed me. The acting was a bit too over the top at times; with some incredibly weak plot points and dialogue. The movie was also pretty slow moving in some areas. However, the movie does have some good points. Some of these are: the romance between Jimmy Olsen and Lucy Lane, Helen Slater's performance as Supergirl, the Phantom Zone, and several tie-ins to the Superman movies. Fly the friendly skies once again thanks to Warner Bros’ extra special release of Supergirl, containing both the Director’s Cut and the International Version of a movie that, while not great, is certainly worthy of another viewing. The end credit music is different than the cue heard on the U.S. version and the international version.

Ultimate cut (140 mins) - Unreleased. Even longer version with at least one extra scene (Linda and Lucy discuss boys - snippet seen in behind the scenes documentary). Broadcast just once on ITV in the UK and never seen again! Ported over from the DVD release, the supplemental items aren’t new but they are solid. Fans get a 50-minute Making Of feature, the International Cut of the movie, and the Director’s Cut of the movie which may or may not improve the film. You decide. Nigel asks Selena whether she thinks him a fool. Selena denies this and argues that one hand washes another.
