Samsung Galaxy S22+ 5G Mobile Phone 256GB SIM Free Android

It’s not quite as sharp as the iPhone 13’s totally flat edge, due to its slight curve, but it still digs into your hand when you’re using the device. That said, of the three members of Samsung’s 2022 flagship line, the Galaxy S22 Plus feels like the one that most people will forget about.

There’ll be no heart stopping moments round the pool (or massive puddles) either, as it’s water resistant. The downside and quite a minus point of the phone is its size, for me personally the phone is too small and too thick. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is quite a bit smaller than the Plus, so if you like a big screen for social media, photography or entertainment, this might be a better device for you. FHD+ is fine for most tasks though, as only select streaming services or games offer content that’s a higher resolution than that anyway.

Before getting to to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus it's worth noting that we now have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus review, as the S22 Plus's successor has been unveiled. Expectedly, the colours are vivid with an impressive contrast ratio and the 2340 x 1080 resolution looks sharp. The 4,500 mAh capacity results in a battery life that lasts around 9 hours and 30 minutes on a full charge with the adaptive refresh rate activated or something closer to 10 hours when the refresh rate is locked to 60Hz. Android 12’s big feature is Material You, which lets you recolor aspects of the user interface to match your wallpaper, and that’s also here, to an extent, though it doesn’t affect too many aspects of the home screen and menus. If you’re after a new mobile, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus really takes things to a whole other level. This upgrade is welcome as the 50MP sensor is a large one, so it ‘sees’ more light, resulting in brighter images and more vibrant colors. We’re only talking about a couple of hundred points in the test though, and in practice, most people won’t notice that kind of difference. There’s also a refresh rate of 120Hz, which means motion looks pretty smooth when you’re swiping between menus or playing games.

Clinging to a time when the most expensive version of a flagship would simply get you a bigger screen, a bigger battery and not much else, its arrival is a particularly tough sell this year. The awkward middle child of the family, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Plus is a bit of a relic of a bygone era. In the Geekbench 5 single- and multicore CPU tests, the S22 Plus scored 1,144 and 3,488, which, as you can see from the graph below, is pretty much identical to the previous Exynos 2100 found inside the S21 Plus. Much like the S22 Ultra, there’s a lot to like here, with the main camera producing detail-packed images with excellent use of HDR, especially when taking pictures in well-lit conditions.

However, if Samsung is as environmentally conscious as it says it is, might I also suggest doing away with the removable plastic layers from the edges of its smartphones? In our continuous video rundown test, the S22 Plus lasted for 19hrs 13mins before conking out – that’s two hours less than the S21 Plus. At the S22 launch, Samsung pledged that its new phones would get at least four years of software updates, which will take you to Android 16 in 2026. Or, if you want even more from your phone camera, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra provides an even better experience, including a massive 40MP front camera.

The bigger screen is a nice bonus, as is the chunkier battery, but sadly I can’t see many of these flying off the shelves. Both are roughly equal in terms of performance, though Qualcomm’s processor generally has a slight edge over Samsung’s. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus has the same four cameras as its non-Plus counterpart: that’s a 50MP f/1. That’s a very high score, and one of the highest we’ve seen from a Samsung phone too, but a few 2021 devices beat it, including the Xiaomi Mi 11, Realme GT, OnePlus 9, and ZTE Axon 30 Ultra. If you get a little snap-happy, the generous battery life will keep up with you, but when it is time to juice up again, fast charge does it in a tick. There’s one caveat, however: you often have to hold the phone steady for a few seconds – not ideal if you’re taking night-time pictures in freezing temperatures with your gloves off.
