The paint itself is top quality – hard wearing, ultra-low VOC and leaves a flawless, professional-looking finish. It’s available in a matte or semi-matte finish and in an almost infinite colour range. While it looks a little pricey at first, this is probably one of the most affordable ways to refresh your kitchen without compromising on quality, providing you don’t already have all the equipment. If painting on bare wood or a lighter shade of paint, one coat should be enough. When painting over bold colours you may need an additional coat. We recommend leaving 24 hours between coats as it will give you a good idea as to whether you’ll need another coat or not.

Eggshell and matt finishes are typically harder to maintain and clean but are easy to recoat. Satin and gloss finishes are easier to wipe clean and keep their appearance for longer. But high gloss finishes are not for everyone. A good compromise is a satin finish. It’s not high gloss, but it's easier to clean than eggshell and matt. Add a dash of sophistication to your kitchen with Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint, for a soft matt finish that’s as stylish as it is durable. The downside is we found this oil-based paint had a strong odour, so you'll definitely need to open the windows!Chalk paint might be seen by some as a fad but we can vouch for its quality. If you want to try something a bit different, try this one. I used this paint on my medium pine coloured kitchen cabinets. It went on and covered really well. I was considering a new kitchen and wall tiles but there was so much of a transformation that I haven't needed to and the colour I chose really set off the tiles. Application: Stir thoroughly before use. The product may be appliedby brush or roller. If applying by brush, apply evenly, following the grain As it’s been specifically formulated for use on kitchen cupboards, you can use this to restore your cupboards, whether the surface is melamine or MDF. It’s also been known to be very durable which is ideal for use on kitchen cabinets as they often get touched a lot.

surface afterwards with water. If wax or oil has previously been usedon the item, clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit. If paintingover a hard or glossy or previously painted surface abrade the surfacebefore application. Refresh your kitchen with Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint, easily applied to melamine, wood and gloss cupboards for a beautiful matt finish The answer that nobody wants is yes, probably! Primers create a base coat for the paint and will help to prevent blemishes or knots in the wood from showing through and make paint more resistant to chipping off. Many specialist cupboard paints are self-priming and suitable for use directly on wood, melamine and acrylic cabinets, but if you want the best possible results, it will probably still pay off to use a primer first. Get Prices for a Professional Decorator Near You Best Kitchen Cabinet Paint Overall: Johnstone’s Cupboard Paint Our runner up for the best kitchen cupboard paint is Ronseal’s Cupboard and Melamine paint. Whilst not quite up to the standard of Johnstone’s, this paint trades high quality for a little bit more convenience, requiring just one coat for most cupboards.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this paint is suitable for interior woods and metals but crucially, this includes plywood, MDF and plywood which are commonly used throughout kitchens across the UK. We opted for the satin finish - although there is a gloss option too - and overall we found this the best paint to revamp either melamine or wood kitchen cabinets, giving a smooth finish and producing great results. Clean all the surfaces you plan to paint thoroughly with a good degreasing detergent or all-purpose cleaner. This is important for removing the kitchen grease and grime build-up over time. Once you decide on a colour, the next step is deciding which finish will best suit your kitchen cupboard goals, and these days there are a whole lot of paint finishes on offer! From chalk, matt and eggshell through to satin, semi-gloss and plain old gloss. With 110 shades on offer, you can buy tester sachets (from 99p) containing enough paint to generously cover 30 x 30cm, to help you decide on the perfect hue.

Once you have prepped your cabinets, add the first coat of primer with a roller. If your cabinet surface is quite glossy though, you may need another coat as the multiple layers will build up added hardiness.

Transform the look and feel of your kitchen with these paints

A huge chunk of the job is the preparation. First, remove all the drawers and handles on the cabinets, so you don’t splatter paint all over them. If that’s not an option, use masking tape to cover them. Although it might look like your cabinets are ready to meet the paint roller, it’s worth cleaning them thoroughly. Next up, lightly sand or ‘key’ the surfaces to help the paint grip. It’s advisable to use a fine grit paper – 150-250 grit, and lightly sand to create an even, matt surface. Although a gloss or semi-gloss finish for kitchen cabinets is generally recommended, this ultra-flat matt finish offers a good alternative if your adverse to a sheen, and the water-based formula is easier to work with than a oil or solvent-based option.

Available in 11 colours, The One Paint is a non-toxic, water-based paint suitable for multiple surfaces including woods and laminates. It even claims to complete the task without the need for a primer, making it the ideal choice for the time-poor. However, we’d still suggest using one if you have time. Coverage: Up to 14m2 / litre. Coverage may vary depending uponmethod and rate of application and porosity of surface.Protect the worktops and floors from splatter with a dust-proof sheet and run masking tape along the cabinet edges to prevent paint from getting on the walls. The advanced water based formula has a nice consistency which makes it easy to apply by brush and still get a smooth, satin finish. It’s also handy that you won’t need to use a separate primer or undercoat – simply prepare the surface as you would for any other paint job and start applying. We achieved this beautiful finish with Johnstone’s Cupboard Paint.
