Description

Aeration is key for dragon fruit cuttings, as they require proper air circulation around their roots. Therefore, the container or pot used for planting should have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Furthermore, ensure that the pot has enough depth to accommodate the cutting. A suitable pot size is one that is approximately 8-12 inches deep and equally wide. Dragon fruit plants have shallow roots, so they don’t require deep soil. A depth of around 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) is sufficient, provided the soil meets the other conditions mentioned.

Choose the big ripe fruits to have more chances of a higher germination rate. Next, scoop the flesh and smash them over a sieve to separate the seeds from the pulp. The juicy fruit contents will pass through while the seeds and some fibers remain. Wash them with running water until clean enough for the next step. Germination The dragon fruit should have a slightly soft texture when gently pressed, indicating that it is ripe and ready to be harvested. Dragon fruit trees can reach heights of 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) or even more if provided with adequate support. At this point, you can place the cutting in soil. It needs to be about two inches into the soil, and the cutting needs to be oriented in the same direction that it was on the parent plant. Make sure to water the plant daily, unless the soil is still moist; then skip a day. Eventually, you will start to see roots appear. If the propagation was a success, you will soon see new growth. This typically takes about three to four weeks. Within a few years, this young cutting will be able to produce fruit of its own. Dragon Fruit PollinationKeep your Dragons fed! If your Dragon's hunger drops below 50 points, you will get a notification that your Dragon will no longer grow unless it's fed and kept above 50 Hunger Points. If you want pitaya to bear edible fruit, you’ll need to pollinate it. Don’t worry; you won’t have to bring bees or bats into the house: hand-pollination with a paintbrush will work as well. You can buy the pollen at a dedicated store or get it from a fruit that you’re already growing outdoors. Be very gentle when collecting it from the flower and adding it to the stigma of the newly grown cactus. Hylocereus Costaricensis – This type of fruit is red in coloration on both the shell and in the flesh. The flesh is often a deep red coloration that looks almost unnatural or blood–like. How to Grow Dragon Fruit Plants

The most common disease that affects the dragon fruit is Botryosphaeria dothidea (a type of fungus). If you notice blotchy spots on the plant (the stems, to be exact), that means it’s time to act. Trimming all the affected parts of the cactus should solve the issue. Sunburns are another widespread problem that makes pitaya peel. As mentioned, turning it regularly will help. If you’re too late, again, use the cutting technique. To propagate dragon fruit from cuttings, start by selecting a healthy stem from a mature plant. Cut the stem into sections, making sure each section has at least 1 or 2 nodes. Allow the stem cuttings to dry for a few days to prevent rotting. To grow, thrive, and develop fruits, pitaya needs 6–8 hours of exposure to direct sunlight during the day. To get the best results, put the pot on a window facing east early in the morning and then move it to a west-facing windowsill during the evening. South-facing windows can be dangerous for this plant, though, as the light might be too strong and leave sunburn marks. Dragon fruitspreferslightly acidic to neutral soil. If you want to test your soil with a soil monitor, you are looking for a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.

You have to equip your dragon for them to grow, a Dragon's age will not progress if they're not equipped. If you’re growing it as a houseplant, you can wait until the plant wilts before watering as you are not concerned about flowering/fruit. As long as you step in before it’s too dried out, it will perk up after you give it a drink. This does cause some stress to the plant, but it’s less stress thanroot rot. Dragon fruit flowers and fruit Size: Opt for a cutting with a length of around 10 to 15 inches. This size ensures adequate nutrient and moisture storage to support initial growth and root development.Growing dragon fruit from seeds involves planting mature fruit in well-draining soil and providing the right conditions for germination. This method takes longer and requires more patience, but it allows for genetic diversity, which can be beneficial for plant health and vigor So, the heavier the container the easier it will be for it to handle all that weight. Also, you might want to add a trellis. Pitaya is a climber, and without proper support, it won’t be able to hold its own fruit. To make the plant grow faster, add some slow-release fertilizer to the pot before planting the seeds. Covering the container with food storage plastic that’s got holes in it will also stimulate growth. Image Credit: theartofdoingstuff 2. What About the Soil and the Fertilizer? To successfully grow dragon fruit from cuttings, one must first prepare the cuttings. After obtaining a healthy cutting from a mature plant, it is essential to let the cut end dry and heal for a few days. This process, known as “callusing,” helps prevent infections and rot. Ideally, the cutting should be placed in a shady, dry location with good air circulation. It typically takes about 5-7 days for the cutting to form a callus. Choice of Planting Medium NOTE: The ride tab will only appear if your Dragon is an Adult or an Elder, you will have to grow the Dragon to either of these age stages to be able to ride it. What else should I know? [ ] To prune your dragon fruit plant, start by inspecting the plant for any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. These branches are often discolored, weak, or brittle. Use sharp, clean pruning shears to cut off these branches at their base, making sure to remove them entirely.
