The LG OLED48C1 is a terrific all-round TV and one that’s easy to recommend to anybody. The Philips 48OLED806 might be better for pure cinematic performance but this LG is more usable and significantly easier to get the best out of. These include eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Those last two are specifically for gamers, with ALLM ensuring the TV’s low-lag Game mode is automatically selected when a compatible console is connected, and VRR dynamically matching the TV’s refresh rate to the frame rate being output by a console.

The audio performance of LG’s C-series has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years. Gone is the muddy fudge of rear-firing speakers in favour of a 2.2ch 40W set-up on the bottom edge of the TV. It’s a similar arrangement to the CX-range from 2020 but a different presentation. Clarity seems to be the watchword for this year and that feels like the right decision, even if that means sacrificing a sense of impact here and there. There are plenty of people who want the best TV possible but don’t necessarily want to go big, and those people have been rather left out through the 4K TV era. The condition is A grade.is just pixel resolution, and yes beyond a certain viewing distance a smaller screen may not yield much improvement here over HD. But HDR and dynamic metadata (which are common in 4K formats like DV etc) mean smaller sized 4k screens still produce a picture with a deeper and more realistic contrast ratio than a similarly sized HD screen. You could argue in fact that a smaller screen’s increased pixel density gives it the advantage here over biggerTVs. The best solution is, of course, to buy a soundbar or dedicated home cinema system. But you knew that, right? Verdict It’s expensive for a TV this size, but if you’re looking for the best sub-50in TV you can currently buy, this is it.
