The latest standard for 4K UHD content is High Dynamic Range. It expands the range of both contrast and colors significantly. HDR reproduces accurately light and dark shades with precise colors and dazzling detail images. You might be tempted to break the bank on a fancy new set from a brand like Samsung or Vizio, but TCL is here to tell you it's fine if you don't. Whether or not you prefer what TCL offers over something a little more fleshed out is going to be a matter of personal taste. Vizio's latest TVs have significantly more going on in the menu department, but they're more expensive and the one I tested ran like molasses. TCL's 4-Series might look a little more stripped down by comparison, but there's still plenty to chew on and navigating it is a whole lot smoother. Whether you're into streaming, gaming, or both, the 4-Series does its job. Some quite fundamental audio/video syncing problems manifest themselves, too. The TCL doesn’t have any problems keeping the pictures and the sound of an off-air broadcast synchronised, but content delivered either by disc or by streaming service can fall out of harmony. If your disc player, like the Samsung UBD-M9500 used for the majority of this test, has some adjustment in terms of sound delay this trait can be overcome. But for streamed content, all the viewer can do is watch the mouths move and wait for the dialogue to come.
