In the crop above you’re looking at the XF 50mm f2 on the left and the XF 56mm f1.2 on the right; since the shooting distance remained the same, the slightly longer focal length of the latter lens has delivered a slightly tighter view and crop as a result. When used on Fuji's APS-C cameras, it sees the same angle of view as a 75 mm lens sees when used on a 35mm or full-frame camera. Turning to a closer focus distance of about 1 meter, we see a slightly different trend develop. Reference image I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap. I only use a cap when I throw this in my bag with other gear, otherwise I leave a clear protective filter on my lens at all times so I'm ready to shoot instantly.

At its minimum focus distance of 26.7cm, it delivers a maximum magnification of 0.5x (1:2). Note that the miniature violin in this example is 9cm in length. 60mm f/2.4 The 56mm is well-known as one of the go-to portrait lenses for the X series because of its beautiful bokeh, so let’s see if the 50mm and 60mm can stand up to their formidable rival! This is an in-depth review of the Fujifilm XF 50mm f/2 R WR lens. Announced in January 2017, the lens is the third in the line of compact, and weather-sealed f/2 lenses made for Fuji’s line of X-series cameras. It joins its XF 23mm and 35mm cousins. This short telephoto (76mm full-frame equivalent) is about half the size and weight of Fujifilm’s 56 mm f/1.2 R lens, and also half the cost! This versatile lens focuses extremely fast so it is excellent not only for portraits and landscapes but also for wedding and street photography. The Fujifilm 50mm f2 R WR is the third lens addition to the f2 weather sealed compact prime offerings from Fujifilm–and in many ways it’s an excellent portrait lens. But it’s also great for much more than that. You see, Fujifilm developed the Fujifilm 50mm f2 R WR lens to be pretty versatile. It can focus fairly close and it has weather sealing built into the design. Combine this with naturally sharp optics, fast autofocus performance, and the not too large size and you’ve got yourself a pretty powerful, compact longer focal length. As you can see, the XF 50mm f2 and XF 56mm f1.2 have delivered 18 and 14 spikes respectively as expected from their nine and seven aperture blades. But in the crop above it’s clear how much better-defined the spikes are from the XF 56mm f1.2. This is most likely down to the actual shape of the blades themselves, and when it comes to rendering blobs at different apertures, the XF 50mm f2 may be less geometrical. But when it comes to diffraction spikes, the XF 56mm f1.2 is clearly superior in my first example. But the image above was shot in the Provia setting and even then I don’t think it totally looks like Provia. Sharpness Flare is not a problem either, images shot against the light showing no sign of loss of sharpness or contrast.

Even with the rain downpouring, the camera and lens didn’t fail to get critical autofocus. If something is even slightly off it’s because at times it was easier and faster for me to focus and recompose. Of course, this is all with the Fujifilm X Pro 2. When using theFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR with the Fujifilm X Pro 1 (which I still to this day I think has better film simulation) the autofocus is noticeably slower. This goes for both the use of the EVF and the OVF; but time and time again the EVF will be ever so slightly faster with theFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR. Image Quality To ensure the focusing is both fast and silent, the lens inherits the same stepping motor as used inside the XF 35mm f/2 WR and XF 23mm f/2 R WR. If the lens performs as well as these lenses do, I anticipate faster and quieter focusing than you get on the XF 56mm f/1.2 R. Essentially, you’re putting theFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR on your camera, autofocusing with it, shooting and enjoying the images. It can focus pretty close too. But because there isn’t a dedicated manual focus option with the lens’ focusing ring, then it’s obviously pretty much just point and shoot in nature. Autofocus TheFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR has fantastic image quality that really, truly speaks for itself. There isn’t a single reason for photographers to complain. It’s sharp, has nice bokeh, doesn’t suffer from any sort of issues the 23mm f2 suffers from when it comes to image quality, and most importantly it’s got great colors. When using the Fujifilm system, it’s honestly tough to complain about the colors anyway. Bokeh As with all Fujifilm lenses, the 50mm f/2 WR does hunt a little before reaching critical focus, but in good light, it is so fast you can barely see it. As you enter low contrast or dimmer situations, you will start to see the lens hunting quite significantly. I have found that indoors it can take around half a second to reach critical focus if you are not in a high contrast situation. The Fujifilm XF 50mm f/2 has a metal bayonet that is just as solid and sturdy as the rest of the all metal lens. Just like my Fujifilm XF35mm f/2, the 50mm f2 leaves very little to be desired, and gives me a lot of confidence that it will last a very long time. Thanks to Fujifilm’s integration of software distortion correction (SDC), users can expect well-corrected JPEG and raw format files with virtually no curvilinear distortion. If you’d like to take full control over how much digital metadata distortion is applied, you’ll need to use software that allows you to do this – Iridient Developer and Capture One are two examples. The Fujifilm XF 50mm f2 is a short telephoto prime lens designed for Fujifilm’s X-series mirrorless cameras. Announced in January 2017, it’s actually the first X lens with an exact 50mm focal length, although joins two existing 56mm options in the series. Above left: Fujifilm XF 50mm f2. Above right: Fujifilm XF 56mm f1.2. Both with supplied lens hoods. And as I mentioned, the face recognition system using this lens is just phenomenal. Fujifilm 50mm F2 lens on the streets?
