After completing an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, her first novel, Out of a Clear Sky, was published in 2008. This means the private jet flown by the queen of the Netherlands must be diverted, causing some unexpectedly helpful additions to her entourage on the way to a meeting with a Texas billionaire who has a radical plan to cool the planet. Soft lighting adds to the warm welcoming feel in this room, whilst large French doors leading to a patio and lets in lots of natural light. Part of the house is today occupied by small businesses, including an accountant, surveyor, councillors, an IT company, artists and crafters. The novel’s set in a remote area of rural Scotland where a rather enigmatic woman has retreated, after an unspecified incident ended her teaching career.

Downgraded to 2 stars for stereotyping a single childless woman as desperate and manipulative, and random/irrelevant episode just for the purpose of shaming emotional eaters. Thank you for taking the time to leave a feedback, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay and looking forward to welcoming you again soon. Sally Hinchcliffe’s Hare House begins ticking gothic boxes on the very first page, where the unnamed, unreliable female narrator notes that names have been changed to protect the innocent – the tale itself, she implies, is quite true. The locals keep to themselves, the village not easily accessible when the snow hits, an old estate house with what appears to be taxidermy gone mad on display for all to see, and a neighbour who perhaps has more secrets than Hare House. The narrator gets caught up in their lives, even though her shrewish neighbour Janet warns her not to. She immediately insinuates herself into the household of the troubled teen girl and her handsome older brother. Not really sure what to make of this one and it seems a few other people have voiced the same opinion.

I think it was made fairly clear what happened at the narrator's school and why she moved to Scotland. The people who fit out cottages should spend a minimum of two nights there so they know what works and what just looks 'cool'.

A creepy, atmospheric read full of gothic imagery, Hare House captured me and stayed long after the last page. The mystery, the setting, the atmosphere… I thought something along the way might be a let down, and I’d fall into the same group of people that hadn’t loved it - I was absolutely wrong, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it; so much more than I thought I would. Attendees of all ages are met with a handshake and a smile, and can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, cakes and biscuits over a game of dominoes, cards or darts. It’s difficult to go into too many details without spoilers but this falls somewhere between psychological and supernatural mystery – with a nod towards folk horror. Meet-up: A members’ only lunch club for those who are isolated or need in need of social interaction 11am – 1. The welcome gifts were very much appreciated and we had a fab week as it was very near to the care home we had booked for my mother.
