Description

A children’s fantasy first published in 1930, this book tells of two brothers, the thin Terry and the plump Edward, who descend into an underground world.

I remember distinctly this being one of the first books I'd set myself to read back when I was a little kid.

Whether you are a jolly Fattypuff or a driven Thinifer you’ll be rooting for the brothers to bring peace to the countries under the Earth. Maurois' lavish descriptions and satirical humour had us enthralled and helped stimulate my passion for reading. I would also check out: How to Live Forever (though that is more for 2-6 years) by Colin Thompson, The House That Sailed Away by Pat Hutchins and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster(all of which I have also reviewed). A fat boy and a thin boy, brothers, go into the countryside one day and find a gap between two rocks which they climb into and find a moving staircase that takes them deep into the earth.

Despite being total strangers to each culture the boys are taken in and welcomed and given homes and eventually their positions in their relative families allows them to influence decisions being made about the Fattypuff vs Thinifer war. Each boy is taught the history of the Fattypuff and Thinifer societies and also taught about their mutual intolerance of each other. If a book sticks in your mind so strongly that you spend more than 20 years trying to find it again thats a darn strong recommendation to it. As a 'Thinnifer' child I empathised totally with the 'Fattypuffs' and loved their comfortable laid back lifestyle and the fact that they got to eat six square meals a day with light snacks in between and didn't give a damn about their weight. She was really good fun, too – which I think is implied by her use only of her first name when corresponding with a boy of about 70 years her junior. The book contains a series of amusing and well thought out illustrations that blend well and add to the tale. Terry also rises through the ranks quickly in the land of the Thinifers, workaholics all, who scarcely eat, and who rush to and from their country, which is all high, sharp spires and thin railway cars.

The fat boy finds himself in a country where everyone and everything is fat while the thin boy does the opposite. The brothers are separated, for you see Edward is a bit on the plump side and Terry is as thin as a rake and through no choice of their own they are drawn into war between the two camps. I loved this book as a child, and for some reason I was thinking about it tonight so I looked it up on Goodreads. Göbekistan ve Kemikistan isimli ülkeler arasındaki çatışmalar ve bu gerilimin ortasında kalan biri sıska biri şişko iki kardeş ana temayı oluşturuyor. Some years afterwards I joined the uniformed Vietnam War protest while serving in the US Air Force and came back to Berkeley (CA) upon my discharge, where I ended up on the student barricades with Mario Savio and the other guiding lights of the Free Speech Movement of the 60s.Although I understand that a copy of the first English edition of this book is now rare and somewhat valuable, even without a dust wrapper, the book in my hands at the moment is, quite simply, one of my absolute favourites from a very early point in my life. That happens to be one of my favourite sensations - the rush of memories that comes when you pick up a beloved book that you haven't seen since childhood.
