The protagonist of this graphic novel is a hitman. He could be described as misanthropic, cold, calculating, nihilistic, cynical... You know the type - at least from books and movies. He is also patient and careful, which is his key to being a successful hitman. As he waits (and waits and waits) for his target, he tells us (the reader) how he got started, why he chose that profession, his philosophy on life, and a few anecdotes about his life and his plans. When he finally get the target in his sights, the job goes terribly wrong and he has to figure out what happened, who he can trust, and what he's going to do next. The Killer (Le Tueur) is a French neo-noir comic book series written by Alexis "Matz" Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon and published 1998-2013. It follows an unnamed Villain Protagonist who makes his living as a contract killer. Below is the partial review I wrote for Fanbase Press. If I could give more than five stars, I would. I waited many years to finish this series. It's an excellent story and worthy of being included in the Best Of comic book lists. The killer appears to have been set up. The story moves to another locale as the killer appears to be more accepting of his life. Great comparisons with wildlife and the art continues to impress. Chapter Three: The Debt COLLATERAL AWARDS OF THE 80TH VENICE FILM FESTIVAL". La Biennale di Venezia. September 8, 2023. Archived from the original on September 9, 2023 . Retrieved September 9, 2023. A sequel series ( Le Tueur - Affaires d'état) from the same publisher contains the following albums: Matz, the French writer behind The Killer comic, has penned many other independent comics in his native language, in addition to writing scripts for video games. One of his most prominent gaming credits include the classic first-person shooter XIII. A fairly flaccid and uneventful affair that suffers from just about every problem I usually have with foreign comics translated into English. Problems which usually begin and end with the writing. Whether something is being repeatedly lost in translation I can't say, but hot damn does this come across as some weakly written sauce. The protagonists dime store philosophising comes across with all the maturity and complexity of a petulant fourteen year-old who has read a chapter of Nitsche and think's his rage at the world is entirely deep and unique. The plot is nothing new, although it didn't really have to be. Contract killer kills people with some moderately competent writing to accompany the pretty solid art. That was all that was needed. Unfortunately, that wasn't really what we got. It does improve somewhat towards the end, with the terrible soliloquy replaced by some better dialogue and character interactions, but it's still a long way from what I was hoping for. I do hope this continues to improve. 3/5

Matz has written a story that's a little more shallow than I would have liked, in that it relies too heavily on self-concious narration that's neither as clever nor weighty as the book seems to think it is. Fassbender plays the titular role of the killer. 2023 marks the first time since 2019 that we'll be seeing the two-time Oscar-nominated actor on screen, and not just in The Killer, as he also stars in Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins. Some of Fassbender's most noteworthy previous roles are as a young Magneto in the X-Men franchise, Prometheus, Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave, Shame and Hunger. After a hit in Paris goes wrong, resulting in a carnage and him almost shooting a kid, the protagonist decides to retire as a professional killer. However, his trusted handler Edward tries to have him killed out of greed, but makes a pretty stupid error by getting a rookie to do the job, which ends in both their deaths when the target finds out. Award-winning director David Fincher will film The Killer in Chicago area". Reel Chicago. January 21, 2022. Archived from the original on January 29, 2022 . Retrieved January 29, 2022. Fincher is using a lot of the techniques that viewers are familiar with, and bringing his style to the proceedings. If you enjoyed the film and are looking for more information about its inspiration, or if you’re a fan of the graphic novels and want to see how well the adaptation fares, we have everything you might want to know. Hitman with a Heart: The Killer slowly becomes more human over the course of the comic, developing a few genuine friendships and feeling deeply protective of his quiet girlfriend, whom he eventually decides to let in on his secret.

As a ruthless hitman who is exceptionally good at his cold-blooded profession, the titular anti-hero travels across the world. But as the crimes of his past take a toll on his mental state, he starts losing grip of his own reality. Imagine a character-driven existential narrative from a novella by Franz Kafka or Albert Camus and add some stylish, hyperviolent neo-noir colour palettes to the mix. Voila! You get Matz’s The Killer. The New York Times was less positive, with Manohla Dargis unmoved by character and plot but nonetheless impressed by the talents of Fincher and Fassbender. "The character is boring and so is this movie, but like the supremely skilled Fincher, who can't help but make images that hold your gaze even as your mind wanders, Fassbender does keep you watching." The Killer travels to Beacon, New York, where he confronts The Expert "Q-Tip" assassin in a gourmet restaurant. Appearing to accept her fate, The Expert questions The Killer's motivations in continuing and lessening competency at his profession, as they partake in her "last supper" of whiskey. Proceeding outside to the park, he shoots her dead after she trips and asks for a hand, before noticing her concealed knife. It's unfortunate then that XIII’s film adaptation is a low-budget feature by Uwe Boll that was critically panned, like most of his other video game adaptations. David Fincher’s The Killer is based on the French graphic novel of the same name, and one can expect there are multiple differences between the source material and its film adaptation. Starring Michael Fassbender as the eponymous character, The Killer follows the assassin on a vengeful hunt following a hit job that goes sideways. The original comics were written by Matz with art by Luc Jacamon and, given their length (five volumes altogether), there are bound to have been changes made for the film.Grobar, Matt (30 August 2023).
