As with most bookshelf speakers they are a decent small to medium size and will fit on just about any shelf or ledge, as the name would suggest! The speakers are heavy and solid – they FEEL valuable. I like the slight upward angle a lot as they are aimed perfectly from my desktop to my ears. They look modern and sleek, with or without the grills (though I have a two year old and will probably keep them on). The cable that connects the two speakers is super long – much longer than I needed (mine are only a couple of feet apart). The right speaker has the IR sensor for the remote and a small status/power indicator light that glows through the grill.

One weird thing about the remote control is that it features two volume up and two volume down buttons. The button pairs do exactly the same thing and we’re not sure why Edifier decided to include multiple buttons for the same task. Other than that, the remote control does its job perfectly. Similar to the R1700BT, the frequency response range is 60Hz – 20kHz. It has sufficient depth in both high and low ends to deliver an accurate response. Also, the speakers are loud at 85dBA, which is ideal for a small to the medium-sized studio. My Impressions so far. Is that they are a great little speakers . They cant be compared to the speaker setups that i have as they are in a totally price and quality range . Every aspect of Edifier’s R1850DB bookshelf speakers are designed with purpose. The medium-density fibreboard [MDF] enclosure reduces distortion and minimises acoustic resonance. The base of the speaker is angled at a 10-degree incline for dynamic precision and delivery. The design of the angle directs sound from the woofers right to your ears producing 70 watts of balanced quality tunes. Edifier’s R1850DB active bookshelf speakers are a stand out in both categories of style and performance. Its 4-inch midrange/woofer speaker drivers create rich lows. Meanwhile, the treble units produce clear highs. A perfectly tuned bookshelf speaker to suit your needs. Anywayz, I turned down the Bass control on the Edifiers and turned up the Polk's volume, while adjusting the frequency point on the Polk until I was happy with the crossover.Initially, I was not impressed. Really, the sub seemed to add very little and I had trouble getting it dialed in to where I was happy. We were not paid for this review. The speakers have since been returned to the PR Company working on behalf of Edifier. I have pretty good ears. I used to be a professional audio engineer. My ears ring a bit now from those days, but I still hear better than most people I know because my hearing is trained.

When you look at the price, it really isn’t that much more expensive and I’ve seen it on sale multiple times. There are plenty of alternatives available if you are looking for small monitors. Build Quality Winner: Edifier R1850DB While it does cost more, the added flexibility for home theater integration and upgradability down the line is an excellent bonus. The low-end is usually my first point of reference and here they perform very well. The depth is there without an abundance of boominess. While not quite a smooth as pure monitor speakers they are fairly accurate. It shares the same 4″ mid-bass driver and 19mm silk dome tweeter as the R1850DB, both appear to be well constructed based on durability testing.
