But we can't expect guys to read our minds or understand our feelings because they're so different from ours! I can tell you I hated and feared the woman who haunted these men just as much as I've ever hated the men who usually take her place. In May, a New York Times interview with the cast of Arrested Development was held up as a disturbing demonstration of how complicity works. I read and loved Tamblyn's Dark Sparkler a few years ago, and I was excited to see what would happen when she turned her attentions to full-length prose.

You ever start reading a book and know immediately that it was going to be something different than what you've ever read before? Michael commits suicide, Pear dies from cancer, Jamar goes on to have a family, Sebastian becomes even more famous and Donald has his own activist radio show. Perhaps it’s easier to ignore the insanity of the world churning out the same words again and again when the page is always refreshing. Also carve out the time to read this book cover to cover because once you start, you won't be able to put it down. one thing i find odd is the inclusion of a trans man who is a victim of maude, but whose story is glossed over. This was partly due to pregnancy and the repetitive strain of typing, but she thinks there was also a psychological element. Still, from this forced break, she was able to absorb copious amounts of media that would then inform the chapters of her book. any man is an incisive, poetic, and brutal account of sexual trauma (both individual and collective) and its aftermath. When the interviewer brought up accusations of sexual misconduct (which he denies) and harassment against the cast member Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter (who plays Lucille Bluth) spoke tearfully about how Tambor had yelled at her on set.

There are several scenes--intimate expressions of grief and processing trauma where the words on the page light up like neon signs. It made all the anger and guilt and bullshit kind of rise up and turn into a sort of righteous feeling of pride. For so many movies and books, if there is a female antagonist, they’re usually doing something to get back at someone. Then two more victims comes forward a famous gay man, Sebastian White and a trans man, Michael Parker who are treated as polar opposites by the media. What You Need to Know: This is a story about the male victims of a serial rapist known only as "Maude".

She has spoken openly, for example, about an ex-boyfriend who assaulted her at a nightclub in Hollywood, dragging her out of the venue “by my private parts”. Taking you away from your timelines and newsfeeds, and forcing you to see how we behave as a group from a clearer, more distant perspective. We are asked went so few women are believed and why so few men come forward in general and what this says about us as a society. However, Tamblyn’s decision to make her antagonist a woman did not start with an intention to expand the conversation around sexual assault. How the survivors grapple with their new reality, and their upended perception of themselves, their relationships, their bodies and the world around them.

Funny enough, the complaint we hear the most from men these days is that they don’t “feel safe” approaching a woman to flirt anymore. The novel opens with the attack on Donald Ellis, while he is drugged during the encounter it is still horrific to read and the way he was dumped to be found was heart-breaking. That you know you're going to get gut punched and deepen that line between your eyes from the intense face you make as you turn each page?By all rights this should not only be an instant classic, it should be added to every high school reading curriculum. While Tamblyn says she has never been sexually assaulted “in any of the ways” in the book, she knows what it is like to be a victim of sexual violence. And if I don’t know you and we’re alone together at a cross stop or on a jogging trail, yes I’m going to have my guard up.
