The book is not all encompassing and wasn't written to be so. I did find areas in the book I felt needed more detailed explanation and some illustrations. That being said, this book is like a compressed zip file where each topic is expanded upon by the author's other specialized and advanced bushcraft books that go into further detail. This book's main premise is to provide the beginner with basic, essential, and introductory information and skills to take advantage of what nature makes available, using minimal gear, to survive and thrive in the natural world. As a camper, I especially liked the author's 4 w's of setting up camp: "Wood", "Water", "Wind", and "Widow-makers". With Canterbury's guidance, you'll not only prepare yourself for any climate and situation, you'll also learn how to use the art of bushcraft to reconnect with nature in ways you've never imagined. Bushcrafting is one of the cornerstones of preparedness and survivability that can be life-sustaining in both normal situations as a hobby or lifestyle, as well as for those emergency situations outside of our control. The better prepared we are for our Horses, the better prepared we can be for the Zebras. If or when that emergency or disaster comes, people like Dave Canterbury and the Amish will be people you'll want to get to know and learn from. The topic of the book is vast and has many folds. It talks about the necessary survival skills like reading the weather, essential kit tools, and necessary preparations. The book also has topics related to making camps. This includes finding the right place for the camp, building a protected shelter, making tools, staying warm, etc. The first aid guide is also available in case of an emergency along with a Food guide, where he tells about the food to eat and things to avoid.

Table of Contents

The ever popular midwife guide, home remedies, first aid, herbal medicine, personal hygieneissues and how to combat them, medicines and prescription substitutes, and general survival medicine. It offers a lot [of] detail...focusing on everything from knots to cooking to trapping.... If you want to learn primitive skills, it's a treasure trove of information." Teilweise werden Grundlagen auch nicht erwähnt. Im Knoten-Kapitel wird dem Leser nie gesagt, was ein Überhandknoten ist. Ja, ein Überhandknoten ist einfach. Dennoch würde es in einem Grundlagenwerk nicht schaden, kurz mal zu erwähnen, was das überhaupt ist. Den Namen des Knotens kennen schließlich auch nicht alle. Eine Abbildung wäre da auch hilfreich.

One area I didn’t enjoy was the long section on trapping. I’ve never liked traps due to their indiscriminatory nature. (Despite the author’s protest that you can weight the springs differently or use a variety of baits to target specific animals – I wasn’t sold.) I think they’re quite cruel and I didn’t want to read too deeply into it. But if this is something that interests you, the section is as well written and diagramed as the rest. What we like: The author pairs straightforward writing with helpful instruction to make a survival guide that is easy to follow and can be easily applied to a range of scenarios." Although this is a subjective and nuanced answer, one of the most popular survival guides of all time is the SAS Survival Handbook, by John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman. It has had multiple revisions over the years, and has been the launchpad for related titles (such as the SAS Urban Survivalist Handbook). The Army Survival Field Manual (FM 21-76) has also been a long-standing favorite for generations. Canterbury covers everything: building out your kit, manufacturing tools and supplies, food collection, cooking and protection from the elements. If you want to 'be prepared' for time in the wilderness, this is a great guide." Of the two hiking books on this month’s list – buy this one. It succeeded in nearly every way the “Walker’s Guide” failed to. It doubles up as a useful how-to guide and instruction manual for wild camping whilst also delivering a series of interesting segments on everything related to bushcraft. All kinds of DIY projects, food production and general self-sufficiency skillsto help you thrive on your homestead. Bees, wine-making, cleaning, soap-making, and much more! Even the old school Foxfire books. In his book Bushcraft 101, he isn’t just telling us about how to survive in the wild, but he has also written about Bushcraft art. It will allow you to connect with nature on a deeper level. If anything, Bushcraft 101: A field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival is the foundation upon which a beginning bushcrafter can build the necessary skills and techniques to fulfill their individual purpose and objectives. While useful, this book suffers because the author knows too much to effectively write a 101 guide. I have been learning about bushcraft for a few years but I have yet to make my own shelter, and I'm also not particularly interested in hunting or fishing, so it was a good book to solidify some of my knowledge, but I think Canterbury overestimated what someone just getting into bushcraft needs and wants from a 101 guide. Search about the best authors of the genre and compare them to know the best one for you. Search their books and buy the one that gets your interest.
