Eighteen-year-old Mallory Greenleaf is no longer interested in chess, not since her hypercompetitive dad left—the game calls up painful memories. But she grudgingly agrees to play in a charity tournament as a favor to best friend Easton Peña. After she unexpectedly beats current world champion Nolan Sawyer, she’s offered a fellowship that will prepare her to play professionally. Even though Mallory doesn’t want to play anymore, she needs the money that winning would provide; she’s delayed college to support her family, since her mother is chronically ill with rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to work regularly. The more time she spends with Nolan, the more Mallory comes to like and respect him—and the more time she spends playing chess, the more she remembers how much she loved it. But when she learns that Nolan has been keeping a big secret from her, she isn’t sure if she’ll be able to move past it to build a relationship with him. Filled with the author’s signature humor, well-developed characters, and realistic conflicts, plus the fully realized setting of competitive chess, this captivating romance will delight teen readers as well as Hazelwood’s adult fans. Mallory and Nolan are both cued white; there is some racial diversity among the supporting cast. Mallory and Easton are queer. i love putting books i wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole into absolute dnfs, actually. go rot. “but this is a debut author” of a bad book. i love being a hater. etc etc etc. So, if you're into swoon-worthy romance, zero unnecessary drama, a relatable FMC in her 30s (YAY!), chef's kiss diary entries, hilarious internet search histories, and an anachronistic slash confirmed bi vampire hottie (who looked a suspicious lot like tom ellis in my mind) with a hidden swiftie side and kermit the frog pj pants, this book's your guy. He is also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, always asks about her day, and doesn't look half bad shirtless on the rare occasions they're both home and awake. But a century ago puts us in the 1920s? By then, we have cars, ocean liners, movie production, airplanes, electricity and women can vote. He should also have experienced a world war and have a grander understanding of the development of the modern world.

How to be a Roommate with a Vampire and Teach Him How to Adapt in the Modern World" sounds like a hilarious and creative sitcom concept that I would happily binge-watch for seasons. Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but it’s a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, she’s desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catch—only someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price. Going into this book, I had high expectations. It sounded delightful and the perfect premise for a paranormal rom-com. But holy hell, what a letdown. Jenna Levine’s sensational debut has everything I want in a romcom – delightfully wry humour, a warm heart, and an utterly adorable romance with the most dreamy hero ever to don a cravat. My Roommate Is a Vampire is altogether a kooky, sparkly piece of happiness.” —India Holton, national bestselling author of The League of Gentlewomen Witches My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a debut paranormal romantic comedy. Cassie Greenberg has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Applied Arts and Design and loves being an artist. Unfortunately, she can’t earn a living that way so she works part-time at a coffee shop and part-time in the children’s section of her local library in Chicago, Illinois.Maybe when a person turns into a vampire, they acquire an encyclopedic and instantly updated understanding of how best to dress for purposes of blending into modern society and attracting victims." He gestured to himself, giving me a broad, dazzling smile. His eyes twinkled with amusement. "What you see before you is the result of millennia of vampire genetic evolution, Cassie. Nothing more." Jenna Levine delivers a fresh, charming romp full of heart and some of the best kissing scenes I’ve ever read. For someone whose love for both vampires and Chicago runs deep, it was an absolute delight of a novel to sink my teeth into.”— Isabel Cañas, national bestselling author of The Hacienda

But what if she can give him a chance and help him adapt to the modern world, even though she cannot hold her feelings for him at risk of her own life? As I already mentioned, the romance between Cassie and Freddie is a bit cliché, with a ton of cheesy lines throughout the book, but it is still sweet, spicy, and largely uneventful. I am all for complicated situations and intense conflicts, but sometimes I just want something simple and easily resolved. It relaxes me and makes me happy. Living with someone you think is hot never ends well. You either end up sleeping with them—which is a huge mistake, nine times out of ten—or else you drive yourself nuts because you want to sleep with them.” There was no chemistry and the infatuation was so instantaneous that I felt nothing for them as a couple. Despite the insta-love, their relationship “development” took so long and the pacing was really slow. The third act was external and didn’t force them to grow at all. It was really just DRY and boring and induced a massive reading slump. I did not care for it at all. It was so rushed, literally within two chapters i believe. Like come on.Cassie Greenberg needs a new place to live, and fast. When she finds an affordable apartment in a beautiful neighbourhood, she knows there must be a catch. Cassie is moving into a new apartment and she doesn’t understand what’s up with her gorgeous yet weird new neighbour until she finds out he is a vampire.
