Monica made her first appearance in 1982, in the Amazing Spider-Man Annual. She was a New Orleans Harbor Patrol officer who gained various superpowers involving the ability to turn herself into X-rays, ultraviolet, infrared and other wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. The first two episodes of the new Disney+ mini-series WandaVisionpaid homage to American sitcoms of the ’50s and ’60s. This week, the show continues this trend by paying respect to ’70s TV, beginning with an intro that mashes together The Brady Bunch,Good Timesand Happy Days. The costume and set design are reminiscent of these shows, and this installment is the first that is entirely in color! Among her lengthy roster of powers, she can bend light to change her appearance, effectively giving her the ability to shape shift; she can pass through solid matter; make herself invisible; and, of course, fly.

You may notice WandaVision is missing one very important element of The Brady Bunch…and that’s the aforementioned “Bunch” in the title. This film is a reminder of what can be done on a shoestring budget with a good idea and plenty of enthusiasm. Even with the addition of newborns Billy and Tommy, Wanda and Vision are well short of the Bradys’ brood. Still, despite the Maximoff-Vision’s smaller family, this episode is positively steeped in Brady Bunch imagery. That’s likely because it was time for WandaVision to present a ‘70s sitcom aesthetic and there is quite simply no more iconic ‘70s sitcom than The Brady Bunch. Wanda and Vision’s new house is distinctly Brady Brunch, right down to the iconic wide wooden staircase. Wanda’s groovy dress is reminiscent of some Marcia Brady fits in the latter years of the show. Then there’s the fact that this episode even gets a Brady style theme song all about family from composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez.
