Telling the truth isn't always natural for children. They know honesty is the best option, but it may mean disappointing someone. Children may lie to avoid punishment or protect their friends. Teaching children to be truthful in their actions and words helps them develop healthy relationships and be seen as trustworthy. The only thing I'm disappointed about is George. I am so torn about George. On one hand he was such a great guy for the majority of the book; they had such an adorable friendship and I'm thrilled that they were able to have a sweet high school romance without necessarily defining their relationship and having it overshadow Savannah's excitement for attending university in the fall. He is co-founder and managing partner at Navalent. He serves on the advisory board of Ethical Systems at New York University, previously served as associate professor of organizational behavior at Fordham University Graduate School and adjunct at the Center for Creative Leadership. Omg, and I can’t forget about the journalism side plot! Savannah and her best friend team up to investigate a scandal involving the old, misogynist baseball coach at their school for the school’s newspaper. Even though this plot was entirely unrelated to the rest of the story, I loved reading about it (and obviously, I loved seeing the douchebag of a baseball coach get his ass handed to him by two teenage girls). I’m sorry that someone taught you to hate yourself because of your body somewhere along the way, but I’m not going to let you pull me down with you."

But when done well, the organization is 16x more likely to have people tell the truth, behave fairly and serve the greater good. The book made me reflect on social norms around honesty, and the different ways “most people” use dishonesty to make others comfortable and avoid conflict. It was also interesting to read how this family seemed to accept that being honest all the time means that you should/cannot care what others think of you, yet there are multiple examples in the book of the author and his family seeming to care what other people think of them. This was why I very rarely hung out with new people—their unknown reactions made me more nervous than it was worth most of the time. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Hey,” Ashley said, pulling away from our hug. “I’m Ashley. This is my little sister, Savannah, and my mom.”That being said, I still think Martin did not do nearly enough examination on any of the major themes. It made it feel like Martin wasn't taking the topics seriously, and I wish this book was longer and more drawn out. I recently finished “To Be Honest” by Ron Carucci, and though initially published in 2021, I can’t imagine anything more significant or timely in 2023 or any other year.
