Writing Resources - The Training Space

The Writing Rainbow is the essential teaching and learning resource for all schools that teach writing using Jane Considine’s systems. Within the tiers of the rainbow are contained the 27 lenses that form the construct for all writing, both narrative and non-fiction. It is perfect for displays and working walls. You will spend the day learning the system amongst like-minded teachers and those within the teaching profession. You will be armed with the tools and techniques needed to implement the system immediately into your classroom. During the initiate section children ‘chot’ (chat and jot) down their ideas from stimulating resources, such as pictures, music and drama. The children are encouraged to use ‘kind calling out’ where they call out examples of vocabulary, adverbs, onomatopoeia etc. Writing at Keresley is centred around a high quality story that captures the children's interest from the outset. The model that is used toteach writingis a personalised approach based around best practice taken from 'The Write Stuff'.The school environment enfolds children in stories, settings and language. The Three Zones of Writing: The FANTASTICs (Ideas), The GRAMMARISTICs (Tools), and The BOOMTASTICs (Techniques) support their learning, precision and writing.Handwriting is taught discretely using the RWI scheme in Fairytale Phase and then through a cursive script model when appropriate. This is practised at least 3x weekly until children are able to join fluently. Children with additional needs have 1-1 support to aid fluency in writing. Edit Type 3: This is when a writer wants to add more sentences to develop an idea further. For this the children are shown how to use ‘editing flaps’. Edit Type 2: Children are asked to re-write a sentence if it doesn’t make sense, could be restructured or generally improved. E3 Edit: The Reimagine In the Enable section pupils write their own sentences, taking the opportunity to deepen the moment. ‘Deepen the Moment’ is where children are challenged to independently draw upon previously learnt skills and apply them to their writing during that chunk.
