The researchers spent three years on the coral reef maps, during which time they analyzed more than 2 million high-resolution satellite images and gathered coral reef data from more than 450 research teams around the world. Poseidon resided in a palace made of coral and gems, and Hephaestus first crafted his work from coral. In general, in terms of average height, the investigated coral areas showed a small range of variation, with two significantly higher peaks, both recorded in the Sicily Channel macro-area, namely the offshore banks (9.6 ± 0.2cm) and South Sicily (8.9 ± 0.3cm) (Kruskal-Wallis, p < 0.0001, Hc = 2461) ( Table1 and Figures2B, 3E–I). In the Ligurian Sea, the Maledetti Shoal (Savona) and Punta del Faro (Portofino Promontory) showed the highest average and maximal heights, with colonies reaching up to 20cm ( Table1). In the North-central Tyrrhenian Sea, the average colony height varied between 2.8 ± 0.1cm in CE Sardinia and 5.6 ± 0.1cm in SW Sardinia. Maximal heights were mainly recorded in S and SW Sardinia, up to 25cm (Boi Cape) ( Table1 and Figures2B, 3H). In the South Tyrrhenian Sea, a significant peak was recorded in the Campanian Archipelago, where the average height of the colonies was 7.1 ± 0.1cm ( Figure2B). In this latter coral area, high maximal heights were recorded in all localities ( Table1). No significant correlation was found within the dataset between average height and average density of the colonies (r = 0.2236, graph not shown). The average percentage entanglement ranged from 16.0 ± 2.3% for the populations found along the deepest part of the continental shelf (40-80m) to virtually absent for those at bathyal depths (>200m).
