Having said that, you can’d go on Wolfram Alpha in your exam and your school might not let you have your phone in class, so the ability to plot graphs in exams is a big plus (though most questions will still make you show working). If you’re doing A-level maths, especially Further Maths, you might also enjoy the process of learning how the calculator works. So I’d say there’s definitely a place for these still, but they are very expensive and are absolutely NOT required for A-level maths. But to answer my most commonly asked question about these… Pros: Cheap, easy to use for younger students. Has all the essentials for GCSE and IGCSE examinations. The CASIO FX-85 GT CW comes with additional features, including a high definition display and improved menu navigation. Approved for Key stages 3 & 4, recommended for GCSE, National and Higher, Junior and Leaving. Complete the short form that accompanies your product. Please ensure that you complete all of the sections, as this will guarantee the timely processing of your return/exchange. Fitzsimons, Bernard, ed. This is the calculator I would recommend for GCSE and IGCSE students and is essential for A-level. It can do everything the fx-85 can do, but has lots of extra tools. In particular the equation solver is super useful for GCSE and IGCSE and there are statistical functions that are absolutely essential for A-level. Although it is still very user friendly, there are a lot more menu options on the fx-991 compared to the fx-85 which makes the fx-85 a little easier as a first calculator for a younger student. It’s also double the price so if you’re buying it for a student who tends to lose things you might go for the cheaper option until they are closer to their exams. Having said all that, if you’re going to buy one calculator for school it should definitely be this one! Allen, Francis (Winter 1993). "The Ultimate Escort?: McDonnel XF-85 Goblin". Air Enthusiast. No.52. pp.17–23. ISSN 0143-5450. A fixed tricycle landing gear was considered for the flight tests but was discarded as the drag was excessive. [12] Cons: Much more expensive than a standard calculator. Takes time to learn how to use. Features that used to make these super useful are now widely available on smartphones.During wind tunnel testing at Moffett Field, California, the first prototype XF-85 was accidentally dropped from a crane at a height of 40ft (12m), causing substantial damage to the forward fuselage, air intake, and lower fuselage. [9] [20] The second prototype had to be substituted for the remainder of the wind tunnel tests and the initial flight tests. [21]

National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. Following the cancellation of the program, the aircraft was transferred to the museum on 23 August 1950 and was one of the first experimental aircraft to be displayed at the new Air Force Museum. For several decades, the aircraft was displayed alongside the museum's Convair B-36. In 2000, the aircraft was moved to the museum's Experimental Aircraft Hangar. Museum staff and visitors objected to this move, believing the aircraft should be displayed alongside the B-36 to properly represent its original design intentions. [36] The initial specification called for the B-36 carrier aircraft to be able to carry either one F-85 and one atomic bomb or three F-85s. [9]During World War II, American bombers such as the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, and Boeing B-29 Superfortress were protected by long-range escort fighters such as the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt and North American P-51 Mustang. These fighters could not match the range of the Northrop B-35 or Convair B-36, the next generation of bombers developed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The development cost for longer-ranged fighters was high, while aerial refueling was still considered risky and technologically difficult. [1] Pilot fatigue had also been a problem during long fighter escort missions in Europe and the Pacific, giving further impetus to innovative approaches. [2] This is the calculator I would recommend for students early on in secondary school (age 11-13) before they start properly preparing for GCSE and IGCSE. It’s a nice basic level scientific calculator and the cheapest option that can in theory get you through school mathematics. It lets you deal with fractions nicely and can do things like prime factorisation and recurring decimals well. Because it doesn’t have so many functions as the more advanced calculators it’s easy to use for younger children, but this does mean it is missing a few functions that can be helpful in GCSE and IGCSE exams. Pros: A fun tool for keen mathematicians. Will plot graphs for you in exams. Your teacher will be impressed by your commitement. Gunston, Bill. "McDonnell XF-85 Goblin." Fighters of the Fifties.
