That title intrigued me. Legend has it that once upon a time there was a stretch of landfrom the western tip of Cornwall to the Isle of Scilly some 30 miles away that was inhabited by a race of handsome people. The land was known asLyonesse, and the tale goes that it was swallowed up by the ocean in a single night. Along with this, the sentences she uses are awfully short and rather choppy as well. Yes, children are used to reading such things, but taking the content of the Charlie Bone books into account, the kids reading them are at least able to understand what sentence variety is. Meaning, of course, that they should be able to handle it. In my opinion, this book would have been much better had the author allowed her characters to speak for themselves, and if she’d varied her sentences to include compounds. Alliterative Name: Several. The most prominent would be Tancred Torsson, and later Bartholomew Bloor and Titania Tilpin. Then there's Alice Angel, Christopher Crowquill, Yorath Yewbeam and his daughter Yolanda, not to mention Bertram Babbington Bloor and his sister Beatrice. Eustacia Yewbeam might qualify too, depending on how you pronounce it. Stroman staged Crazy for Youlast year at Chichester Festival Theatre, and it was a gold-star treat. The show’s transferring to the Gillian Lynne Theatre in Covent Garden from June 24 for a six-month season.

Hidden in Plain Sight: Charlie's father. He was imprisoned in Bloor's Academy for years, where he posed as a piano teacher. When Charlie starts attending the Academy he sees him without ever realising who he really is. After finally discovering where he's been hidden, Charlie is quite bitter about this. Two-Act Structure: The first five books focus on Charlie and his friends as they try and foil the Bloors' evil plans and rescue some of the Bloors' many victims. Throughout it all Charlie strives to find his father, who was hypnotised and lost long ago. He does eventually, and they bring him home in the fifth book. The last three books focus on the quest to find Maybelle's will and lead up to Harken's second (and final) attempt to take over the city. Well that was quite a waste of time. I only read beyond the first couple of chapters to learn what the point of the whole thing was, and there really isn't one. Manfred Bloor is a hypnotist and is one of the main antagonists. He hypnotised Lyell Bone, causing Lyell to lose his memory. Toward the end of the series, Manfred's endowment changes and develops into that of his ancestor Borlath's, which is the production and control of fire.Olivia goes through this in Castle of Mirrors, when she goes into denial about being an endowed child of the Red King. In the end she accepts that she is endowed, though she feels more resigned to it than anything else. The Bloors are gathering their evil forces - thieves, poisoners, kidnappers, swindlers and even murderers from Piminy Street. And Lord Grimwald, Dagbert's father, is enlisted to drown Charlie's father and mother on their second honeymoon using his magical Sea Globe. It looks like Charlie's only hope might be the mysterious Red Knight. But who is he? And can he help Charlie defeat the Bloors once and for all? Many of the adult support characters came across as impotent and inept. Incidents that occurred to them felt contrived and weak - a man comes into your shop to strong-arm you and you just take it AND let your help just walk out the door? Strength in numbers, people! Who would have thought that the first book (which I read in a day) and the last one (a week- but the VERY BEST) were a hit (on me)! The relationships (which were a little out of subject when the children were involved- Tancred and -forgot her name-, Lysander and lauren and Emma and Tancred) had effects on the plot. Uncle P. and Julia Ingledew's relationship was nice. And I really liked the suprise when he asked her to marry him (in hospital). Carlie's father (of whom I suspected, and was right), Lyell, hid the box in a place that neither I would have never thought of- under the organ seat at the cathedral. Was also the red knight and never went whale watching. PC Singh's is a descendant of the red king (never, ever suspected that). Cats Are Magic: Played straight in the case of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, otherwise known as the Flames. They used to be leopards belonging to the Red King, and are capable of turning themselves into fire, and occasionally can resume their true forms.

Her best-known work may be Children of the Red King, also known as the Charlie Bone series or Red King series, in which Charlie Bone's magical talent embroils him in the sinister intrigues of his new school. By 2006 Charlie Bone titles had been published in nine foreign-language editions. Translations into eleven other languages were in progress. [13] [c] A prequel trilogy, Chronicles of the Red King, has been published, which tells the story of the Red King.He played rugger on the wing and was coming into ballet classes with “broken arms, a broken nose and broken fingers.”

Mysterious Protector: The Red Knight serves as this during the last three books. No one except a chosen few know who he is. Disappeared Dad: Lyell Bone, who was hypnotized by Manfred and hidden away as a music teacher in the Academy for the next ten years. He's woken up in the fifth book and is finally reunited with his wife and son. Olivia Vertigo is an illusionist, but she does not discover her endowment until the fourth book. She is an aspiring actress and is constantly changing her appearance, especially her hair colour.

I wanted to like this series, and in some aspects I did. I really liked the premise and the setting. I enjoyed how it delved into the history of Red King's family and how the author was able to introduce and explain the children's powers.
